Pic related are the adorable prairie voles. They're considered monogomous because they tend to form a life-long preference for a partner after mating and spending some time together afterwards. In my lab we study the mechanism behind this bonding and use them as a model for social behavior in behavioral tests because they're much more social/affiliative than mice or rats. I would say more but this is a small field and I want to stay anon.

What I'm interested in is how the opioid system plays a role in these bonds. Basically, you can give them morphine or another mu-opioid agonist and cohabitate them and they'll still form the monogamous bond without mating. You can also give them naloxone, an opiate antagonist (blocker), before mating and cohabitating and they'll fail to form the bond. Therefore it appears that endogenous (released in brain) opioid release plays an essential role in forming these bonds. I'm exploring this further and right now I'm in the middle of seeing whether such an opiate antagonist could abolish existing bonds.

This is pretty interesting to me because I'm a recovering heroin addict who stays sober by taking a shit-load of a long-lasting opiate antagonist to avoid relapse and cravings (literally can't get high no matter how hard you try when you take the pill, gonna try to get the 30-day shot soon). This research shows how your opioid system probably has a really important impact on basic human connections and how we feel about people (including possibly your SO which is a bit crazy). It's also been shown that opiate-antagonists decrease feelings of connection with others which I think should be considered because healthy human connections are essential to recovery from addiction. Maybe by understanding this mechanism we can better understand and account for that (but that's p lofty and deluded and I'm aware of that, I just need to write my honors thesis).

the study im referring (im the opioid anon) was on human women. there was a large sample and they registered which receptors in the brain changed the most during and after pregnancy, they found the oxytocin to be of lesser impact than previously though and the endorphins role was striking, which kinda makes sense if we consider the pain of motherhood... well it’s suatained by more sensitivity to endo opioid

sorry for your addiction. i became interested in endo opioids and neurotransmitters in general because during a sever depression i had persistent sensation of pain in my body, i don’t have a receipt but something that helped me A LOT was taking care of some cats, especially a cat that was abandoned near my house at the time + spending time in the woods. now i’ve been mostly good for 2/3 years expect a bad few months induced by drugs (speed + weed) and consequent withdrawals. well weeks ago i was in a forest, it’s still winter so no leaves, all naked branches and at some point i arrived in a place where small violet flowers had bloomed on the ground. it was psychedelic. i felt intense shivers and i started crying from the grace. i returned home walking as if i was riding a marshmallow cloud. i hope my ramblings can make sense.

If you're rich you can get any girl you want even if you're old/ugly, but she will never love you.

Women are more paranoid when it comes to casual hook ups, but they also don't take relationships as seriously as men do.

No but you can form some pretty close relationships with people for no good reason because of it in my experience and even feel like you're falling in love with someone. Want my honest guess? If you tried this with a human, they'd likely end up going insane if you tried it on a long term scale. Imagine having feelings for someone you shouldn't... Because we are self-aware and intelligent, we'd begin to question WHY we have feelings for them. And when we are unable to justify said feelings, it would begin to metaphorically tear your mind apart.

Human psychology is a lot more complicated than animal psychology.

I really like that story because I've practically experienced that drug-induced falling in and out of love over the course of a few hours and as someone in a long term relationship with someone i love dearly I find it a bit depressing, almost to the point of morbid fascination.
