Is it worth majoring in STEM if I’m bad at science?

>> No.10535854

>>10535847
Don't know, probably not. But it's definitely not worth majoring in philosophy.

major in pure math. i am awful at physics, chem, bio, etc but pure math makes sense to me. maybe you will also find pure math more intuitive if you're not good at science like me

Redpill me on a math degree. How marketable is it on the market?

>> No.10535927

>>10535854
Only if you just assign worth to what's marketable in a post industrial economy

>> No.10535932

>>10535854
Its easily the most rigorous and respectable humanities degree. Besides there probably wouldnt be STEM without Philosophy rescuing knowledge from fairytale sky Gods.

>> No.10536014

>>10535927
Sure. And you can assign worth, philosophically, to whatever thing you feel like that makes the degree really worth it. Still not worth it in the sense most people, and OP seems to, speak of.

>Its easily the most rigorous and respectable humanities degree
There's an obvious joke about the smartest retard I think you're trying to pull me into.
>Besides there probably wouldnt be STEM without Philosophy rescuing knowledge from fairytale sky Gods.
And in that same way you could say that there probably wouldn't be any philosophy without those fairytales that indicated the beginning of the search for explanations to the natural world. Being a precursor to something great does not itself make the precursor great. Einsteins mom could have easily been the average dumb jewish broad.

philosophy is great but not marketable
do pure math, it even has logic

How is a theoretical physicist positioned in the job market?

>> No.10536100

>>10536085
You probably gonna end up code monkeying. Or stay in universities forever.

What I would like to know is, how are experimental physicists postitioned in the job market. Especially with specialization in semiconductors.

>> No.10536108

>>10535904
well i plan on teaching, which there's always a demand for. if you get a master's degree you can teach community college which has a pretty decent job market if you're in a big-ish city and you can make 100k+.
otherwise you can become an actuary or go into cs/computation

t. 3rd generation math major and 4th generation teacher

>> No.10536118

>>10536100
Is it that bad of an outlook? You could end up getting paid a lot for coding, and if you want to do research then yeah you stay in university.

>> No.10536185

>>10535847
If you're bad at science I've got bad news for you. You fucking suck at philosophy.

>> No.10536277

>>10536118
Yeah, I'm in my masters, but theoretical physicist.
Looks like all of them gonna end up somewhere coding shit. Not saying the paying is bad. Probably pretty good.
But don't expect more than coding.

philosophy is not science

Calm down man. Philosophy graduates will end up being your manager and getting paid more than you. Your future girlfriend will fantasise about fucking him.

>> No.10536406

get a phD and do research. It's not that bad and you'll get a good paycheck.

>> No.10536538

Is it what you're currently doing?

>> No.10536618

>>10536406
But I don't want to get a phd. I actually don't like research in university. That's why I'm asking how the job market for experimental physicists is with a masters degree. Specialization in semiconductors.

There's still hope anon, one of the best AI researchers in the field, Jeremy Howard, only has a philosophy major and he's doing just fine.
