It is postulated that we don't immediately regain full cognitive function upon waking from anesthesia.

What thought experiment can I do immediately after I wake up to test this?

I'm currently planning on thinking about the block universe and the subjectivity of the present moment. I believe it requires a higher level cognitive function to do so.

Well I will try to. If I don't then I don't, no big deal.

Not exactly a ground breaking postulate desu. It's not hard to find videos of people acting like idiots after waking up from GA.

Yes just getting laser lithotripsy on a kidney stone.

Yes but last time I awoke from it I wasn't acting like an idiot.

Depends really. Some people recover really fast and you're mainly drowsy after that, you don't really want to think much.

because your brain wasn't storing memories at that point

You won't feel like it. You'll feel like shit after waking up and you'll be more concerned with puking than some silly thought experiment

>> No.10532497

As someone who's watched people wake from anesthesia in the OR, I'd say it's more than just "postulated". People remember waking in the recovery room, but the process actually starts at the end of the surgery. Usually the people are too BTFO to remember it though, but not always

UPDATE: As I opened my eyes I acknowledged what had taken place. (Perhaps it's just the point at which I regained memory) Within the first 30 seconds of memory I remember the block universe and that time is subjective, a task I deem requiring a decent level of cognition.

The weird thing is, my first GA three weeks ago, I didn't remember being taken to the operating room but this time I did remember it and having a mask slightly put over my face. (I think for oxygen)

Overall, these experiences did seem consistent with the idea that consciousness is on a spectrum and that if your memory will be erased of an event, you won't feel as if it ever happened.
For example, if I was told I would experience extreme pain for 1 minute in exchange for 10 million dollars, but my memory of the even would be wiped, I would likely do it as it would seem like it never truly happened.

When I was an orderly one of my jobs was holding down patients coming out of anaesthesia. Depending on what they were using to put them under people were usually feisty as fuck before they came out of it.
I can confirm that your body wakes up faster than the brain, I don't know how much you're going to remember either, most folks are surprised to find out that the operation is over since they had "just" closed their eyes.

That you remember.

If you have a family member or friend who can be present, ask them to video you when you first come out from under. You may be in for a surprise.

Note: Hospital unlikely to let them be there when you first come around, but you will likely be loopy long enough to get something on video. If you want to get something from the first moments of regaining awareness, you could try taking to the doctor or whoever runs the unit where they care for you immediately post-surgery. I don' like your chances, but it costs nothing to try...

My very first GA I had an endotracheal tube and as a result I had a very sore throat waking up.

I'm normally cracking jokes, and my family member said I kept saying "I can't sing" but I recall trying to make a joke that "I can't sing in the car on the way home now." I might not have said the sentence completely (I thought I did) and assumed they knew what I meant and assumed that they knew I had a sore throat.

So I think there might be diminished social intelligence upon waking (usually have good delivery) in that I assumed my awareness of my sore throat wasn't exclusive to my mind. (That others were thinking what I was thinking)

If you know a language that youre not fluent in maybe you should try to use it upon waking up

I went under general anesthesia three times and everytime I lost access to the speech parts of my brain. I could "think" in french (my mother thongue) but could only speak in 'layered' languages. From least proficient to most, excluding french which was blocked.

The first time I only knew english as a second language and I wasnt really proficient in it, (speaking it) yet after the aneshesia I only had access to english. My family and friends were weirded out by my sudden "good" pronounciation and fluidity. It wore off after a few hours.

The second time I had access to spanish, third time mandarin.

When a word was unknown in mandarin, spanish would take over, then english. But french is always locked for a few hours.

Practice a language youre learning or make up your own lol
