Why is Symbolic Logic(The class) a philosophy class rather than a math class?

>Why is Symbolic Logic(The class) a philosophy class rather than a math class?
Why would it be a math class?

>> No.10497740

Isn’t logic a math thing? But then i guess you could argue Philosophy is the roots of the tree of knowledge, where math is the trunk

>Isn’t logic a math thing
That one hurt.

Isn't reason a philosophy thing?

Because it's taught as a topic in discrete math I or II.
CS has a more autistic version that is taught when learning automata.

>> No.10497786

>>10497764
No we don't have an autistic version, we just learn normal discrete mathematics like in the picture above. JFL at people here saying that CS isn't a science

I'm sorry anon, I actually go to a decent university and logic is in the mathematical curriculum

>> No.10498167

>>10498106
Everyone has logic in their math curriculum. Logic specifically belongs to philosophy

Are those temporal logic operators?

>> No.10498522

Logic is a subset of philosophy. I was taught that in high school

>Logic is a subset of philosophy.
This kind of saying can be very dangerous, it is very reductionist approach of the academics. For example, in this sense you can say science is sebset of philosophy. Just look at full name of newton's principia : Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, used the line of Principia philosophiae by Descartes.
OP's argument is completely valid.

It's a philosophy that becomes mathematical the further you study it.

What's wrong with that, though?

No, I follow a course in FORMAL logic, not some propositional Aristotelian bullshit

Because philosophy isn't scientific

Math is the quantifying of logic, so, because there is no quantity involved it—definitionally—cannot be a maths class.

Math is a subset of logic.

>> No.10499002

Philosophy is literally the study of how to reason logically. Logic is part of that.

>> No.10499309

>>10498933
Formal logic belongs in philosophy, anon.

>> No.10500052

depends on your institution really, most are shitty ones and they dumb the math down a lot

>> No.10500162

Those professors teaching logic in the phil department have their own publications full of meaningless symbols being shuffled around in incomprehensible ways.

>> No.10500505

>philosophy
lol, symbolic logic is used in computer science and for proofs for infinite math problems. Calling it philosophy is absurd.

In order for something to philosophical it must be up for debate. Math is not a debate

>> No.10500527

>>10498956
its not that hard.
Philosophy => Math

Bot those statements are incredibly retarded.
You sound like you never did any academic work.

>> No.10500591

If you thin symbolic logic is philisophical, you have no right to call anyone a retard.

It’s like saying “1 + 1 = 2” is philosophical. Statement of facts is not philispohy
