Tyson is an actor playing the part of a genius. He knows that would have added up to nothing if he worked in academia, it's much easier to present yourself as "science dude" and talk about complex theories with depth shallower than a wikipedia article so that people worship you as a genius. It wouldn't be that bad he showed a little humility but it seems that along with Nye, he bought into his own image of a genius and thinks of himself as a voice of authority regarding science while in reality he's just an entertainer. So yeah, I find it hard to respect him.

I can’t speak for everyone, but a lot of it is that he’s not very impressive for a scientist. Yes, of course he has a PhD and a handful of publications, but compared to someone like Avi Loeb, who has an h-index of 99, it’s clear that Tyson is mainly a science popularizer.
