I never visited that subreddit before this thread.
Had a quick look, it seems okay. Definitely more left leaning than /sci/. The threads seem to focus less on discussion and more on just showing interesting things and leaving the discussion to the commentators. I wouldn't really visit there if I had a specific interest in a math or science discipline, I'd rather just find the subreddit for it and ask questions there.

Threads on specific subreddits for mathematics, different scientific and engineering disciplines, etc. and stackexchange for math, physics, cstheory, etc. all have a much higher quality community and post value than /sci/. You get to talk about actual stem without any blast of insecurities and shitposting you get here.

Better than this place for actually discussing science.

>> No.10437762

This isn’t really a good place to ask. People harbor a false sense of superiority here because they’re a bit edgier, a bit more right leaning, and they use the “naughty words that npc’s would never dare to use.” This doesn’t make them better or more developed than reddit, but it does lull them into thinking their selection of 10 shallow topics is more meaningful than the competition. The reality is that /sci/ is just as, if not more circlejerk-y, full of more insecure mediocre students, and completely devoid of value as your average subreddit for math and science. If you want good discussion, make a stackexchange account and join an irc or academics discord.

This, /sci/ is the frat house of STEM discussion.

Our sense of superiority is justified because it's more fun and interesting to post here than reddit. If you disagree with this you are objectively wrong

>more fun and interesting
Neither of these are qualifiers. But even so, they’re not easily justifiable

is posting the same 15 meme threads and getting the same 5 responses “fun?”

/sci/ may be more fun because the anonymity allows discussions to be less formal. Plus, the fact that all of STEM is condensed into one board allows more varied discussion. But /sci/ is definitely more toxic than an equivalent subreddit. Just look at any thread where someone asks simple questions about a field that they're not familiar with but is interested. The poor guy gets insulted for it.

>> No.10437810

>>10437804
"Toxic" is a loaded word. The phenomenon it describes exists, but if you're used to it the lack of "toxicity" in other places just emphasizes their smarmy and false character. It's been a long time since I felt any negative emotional reaction to being insulted on 4chan, except when there's a chance I might get btfo about something

the toxicity of 4chan imo has a "nothing personal" feeling to it, I feel comfortable saying things here that literally everyone else in the thread disagrees with, probably largely because of the anonymity. reddit is the opposite, fake camaraderie and constant cock comparing, and ugh don't contradict the hivemind you incel shitlord baka I need to lie down

4chan to me is an information database, everything leads to something interesting somewhere, you have to filter the good and the bad, Reddit is more like a pattern of consistent information that can either be accurate at most but provide no insights, and at worst is inaccurate and sometimes false due to people being swayed by the fear of appearing to be "wrong".

This. I once tried to explain why Star Trek Discovery is trash, because it literally isn't flimed like Star Trek should be filmed, and I got dogpiled.
