If I already got myself a biological sciences degree and don't want to waste my life going back to square one to study medicine, should I do some programming and get a bioinformatics master degree for the money?
It's all research based however this is the only field in biology that actually has jobs.
Does anyone know if people are shilling for bioinformatics? Is it getting the same attention that coding in general is getting?
Is it going to be saturated soon?

Most don't even know what bioinformatics is fortunately. Downside is companies generally want a comp sci student.

It’s good but you’ll soon see that it’s hard to compete with people from math/cs backgrounds, but at least you won’t be a lab monkey. It’s the biology of the future.

You mean the bachelor's should be from computer science?
But when you've got the masters do they ask about your bachelor's too?

>>10431685
That's okay. I already learn some R and python on the side so I can do it.

We already have, SENS is the plan. The only issue with it is translating that into actionable procedures.
Which isn't really within the remit of bioinformatics.

Learning R and python is good, all I’m saying is just be prepared to feel like a brainlet when you start getting into big boy statistics etc.

lmao , sci in 2019 really lowered the bar

stats is objectively hard though. even for smart people. its unintuitive.

Yeah but people are only taught proof-free meme stats, real statistics is hard according to sci

Yeah it is a cool field, but be wary. I initially wanted to study bioinformatics, but quickly realized that the people making the biggest impact on the field aren't computer scientists or biologists, but rather mathematicians, statisticians, and physicists. Unless you want to work in a glorified trade (learning how to write / optimize pipelines, doing analysis of experiments devised and carried out by others who will claim they know more than you about what their data means) don't go this way.

That being said, if you're a biologist and have wet lab experience (I assume), with some programming experience you could probably do some cool things - just be flexible and be willing to be experimental/computational (a Twoofer, if you will)

I mainly want a job. I don't really mind having a lower impact in the field.

Yes. The professor's would love it too since they don't know any programming

Lol.

Keep in mind this is way better than being a lab monkey biologist.

Yes it's way better desu. Better be in a glorified trade than be poor.
