I've been a NEET for 7 years, I dropped out of HS in 2012 and I have no education beyond self-study, I've just recently gotten into biology and chemistry.

Should I even bother going back to school or should I just continue self study? Am I too old?
>mfw going through the /sci/ archive and seeing someone from 2017 asking if they're too old to start college

You're never too old for biology. The more important question are you capable of putting in the time and effort needed into a degree, or will you just do the bare minimum and jack off to anime?

No
>Should I go to school?
Maybe. What do you expect to get out of it? Community college is cheap, not that much commitment and you will learn all about the basics of bio and chem. Having a professor is much better than self learning, btw.

Excuse me but I'm not a degenerate weeb, I am at best a crypto-furry.

I doubt I can get an understanding neurobiology and genetics out of my local CC, I'm currently reading Campbell Biology and Chemistry The Central Science but I don't have a lab so what I learn is pretty much worthless.

You have a much better chance of understanding that sort of thing by going to CC than by remaining a NEET and attempting to self study, I promise.

Stop making excuses. The chances of you being the dumbest in the room is small. And if you suspect you're a dum dum, what makes you think you can self learn? I don't think you think that about yourself, I just think you have anxiety over losing your NEET status. I implore you to think about going back to school. It is never too late. All the best of luck~

not really. I though that self-learning was something that everyone could do but as time passes I realise that is a blessing that not everyone can do.
the people that can not do it it's because of insecurity that "you are not doing any learning if theres no one watching over you" or "it's not serious learning if theres no one watching over you"

This. If anything, trying to study autodidacticly whilst being a brainlet is going to be more problematic than being a brainlet and studying it at CC.

Just my take, but if you're smart enough to prepare and access a rigorous self-study regimen, you should also be smart enough to self-teach all but the heaviest subjects. I can't attest to neuroscience, but I can definitely say a BS level understanding of genetics is within reach of anyone who can prepare a curriculum properly.

Most textbooks have regimented content, and non-introductory books will lay out or assume what you should already know from other textbooks, but none of the subjects I studied had a single regimented series of textbooks, and I assume that's uncommon. Therefore, you have to be able to plan what order to acquire knowledge, and what textbooks will be able to accomplish that efficiently. Plus, many textbooks have sections you don't need to worry about yet/at all or are not a good enough source for that material. One of the main advantages of self-teaching over a modular class structure is that you can cut out chaff and avoid having to go over material repeatedly/unnecessarily, so long as you're a good planner.

The sticky is a start, and you can ask specific questions on this board. You might also find a university degree program and emulate the broad strokes, though I'm not sure where/if you can find them online. You could even email a local college department and ask about their curriculum.

i guess you have a point there, I just go look to another source, the good thing about doing this routinely is that now I have a pretty good "eye" to judge explanations, a good explanation is a thing of beauty, pure poetry (I guess this is just autism)

Dont deceice yourself. You dont have any competence over others, just because you have self-studied some sciences arbitrarily.

is throwing the word "arbitrary" at everything a /sci/ thing? What's wrong with being your own arbitrator if you practice due diligence? Certainly has to offer something over choosing to be ignorant
