imperial units seem more natural to our instincts though. walk a mile in 15 minutes. pounds and ounces are easier to understand in terms of carrying weight. feet/inches feel more natural that metres/centimetres too.

American spotted.

Walk a kilometer in 10 minutes.

2 kg is a big bottle of water. So no.

The human brain is exponential. The more it knows, the more it can know. If you learn a web of knowledge rather than a simple string of facts you will remember more, know more about the topic, and retain more of it. It’s one of the more brilliant aspects of this most complex biological computer. It is not a bucket that you have to forget things to remember more. Sure, some parts of the brain work like that for changing short term memory into long term, but for long term, complexity is king.

The Imperial system is not simple. The Metric system is very simple. Sure I can remember 10 of everything. But my brain uses more to remember 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 1,760 yards in a mile. The worst thing the UK did to its people and their potential was to decimalise the monetary system. Pre-decimal, people knew there were 12 pence to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound, even 21 shillings to the guinea. Does the impact of that not register? Think about it, people could do base-12, base-20, and base-21 maths IN. THEIR. HEADS. No calculator. It’s no wonder the Industrial Revolution, inventions, and concepts the world depends on originated in Britain. Their brains were massive. The Germans have come up with a lot, sure, but imagine if they weren’t handicapped by a simple base-10 measurement system during their formative years. Now THAT would be an Übermensch.

Next, the Imperial system (and Fahrenheit) are based on the human experience. Most people have a foot at the end of each leg and if their own are small, they’ve encountered men’s feet. And, it may seem odd that 32° is freezing and 212° is boiling, but note they are 180° apart, half a circle! And for most of us in the Western world, our life experiences are between 0° and 100°F. “What will today be?” “In the 70s.” I know what to wear. The 20s C? Massive difference between 20° and 29°. Not very user friendly in terms of a mortal being living his life. But I digress.

The Imperial system evolved over centuries of people experiencing their world. Where did the Metric system come from? From the French National Convention of 1792–1795. The same people who brought you the Reign of Terror and countless heads lopped off by the guillotine. Then forced on the rest of Europe as a tyrant marched across the continent. Nice.

It has its place, of course. That place is the laboratory. Science works quite well with the simplicity of 10; it’s got a lot more going on to give the necessary complexity. But for us average Joes, we need the Imperial system. It keeps us on our toes. It gives the brain an added boost.

So, we keep our miles. They’re poetic, they make sense, they are just grand.
The Metric system: dumbing down the world since 1795.

Once you take the base-12pill, you realize that SI is arbitrary as fuck as it is based on an equally arbitrary base-10 system.
Until we switch to dozenal and a system based entirely on natural units, no unit system will be good. Until then, have fun whenever you need to divide a unit by a number other than 2, 5, or a power of 10, Anglos. We Americans are at least somewhat on the right path with 12 in:1 ft and 3ft:1yd.

Not all numbers frequently encountered are frequently encountered only because of the base we use. The only reason you'd divide by 5, for the most part, is to do some manipulation with units that were developed for a base-10 system.
