should morality encompass nonhuman animals if they are capable of suffering and higher cognitive functions (as Peter Singer said)?

This question is heavily biased towards a utilitarian point of view.
I personally do not view the maximisation of happiness as the highest good.
Human biology and instincts are not logical and the moral goods that make them most satisfied are not either.
Hence, for example seemingly illogical and trivial distinctions in the trolley problem can change what is considered good or wrong.

There are no clear and easy logical rules for what is the highest good and sometimes like with the trolley question there is no one obviously right and unambiguous answer.
To cope with the inevitable angst and suffering most people try to find some kind of forgiveness or peace through religious or philosophical traditions.
To find that kind of peace is the highest good.

But below that I would say that as social apes most people simply most desire to be kind to others.
Some "loves" I would list that most most desire are community, friendship, family, romance and charity.
We don't like hurting other people because as social apes we personally enjoy seeing others to be happy and morality isn't really more complicated than that.
Just like people find happiness in cultivating even an inanimate object like a bonsai tree or a nonhuman pet most people find most of their happiness in caring for other people.

I assume his argument is that if an animal has sufficient cognitive functions to experience empathy for another's suffering, morality can arise.

I'd argue that morality isn't the only thing you would expect to arise from the ability to understand how another creature feels suffering.
If you hate another creature, understanding what makes it suffer would allow you to inflict maximal suffering on it through torture.

i dont understand how can one cope with suffering by forgiveness. on the other hand i think that indeed when we are suffering then we are more prone to forgiveness, but i dont think that forgiveness somehow alleviates suffering

>morality is real phenomenon and has biological underpinnings
I'm not denying that. All I'm saying is that it's nothing absolute or fundamental, it's just a result of evolution. It doesn't have to be anything, there is no inherently wrong or right morality. It's just that the one that is most suitable from evolutionary standpoint dominate, at least most of the time.

>i dont understand how can one cope with suffering by forgiveness
I'm not a Christian.
Christianity is just one of the more popular and well known religions that deal directly with the problem of how to find inner peace even though you can't always find a good moral solution.
I think maintaining that sort of calm is a great good but I can hardly say I know the best way towards that myself.

yes but if you compare moralities across space and time you will see some common ground and this means that this has biological basis so some elements are absolute/fundamental

I think we should accept that in order for us to survive we must inflict suffering in others. It is the nature of survival. When you kill an animal it should be for sustenance or for god, anything else is evil.

>> No.10419411

>>10418019
>yes but if you compare moralities across space and time you will see some common ground and this means that this has biological basis so some elements are absolute/fundamental
That doesn't mean imply they are fundamental. It's just that specific patterns are well suitable from evolutionary standpoint and probable enough to manifest. Just like our bodies, they are nowhere near perfect. They just happen to be most suitable for domination over planet, but they are also full of flaws. We can engineer bodies(robots) that are way more suitable for specific tasks and one day we might engineer new general bodies for ourselves. There is no fundamentally good body nor morality, there are just instances that are more adequate than others in given context.

>in christian morality there is always a good moral solution
Considering how Christianity changes over time, it doesn't make much sense. Crusades, like many currently immoral practices, were considered good in past. It literally changes to reflect what people consider good at particular moment.

And so are the African results.

>"draw a man" test given to children who had never held a pencil (it's not even an IQ test anyway)
>children accustomed to having their faces marked for ritual purposes didn't remove the researcher's mark from their face for the mirror test

>a private school that tested low: deemed representative
>samples from a school for the retarded located in Spain used as a proxy for average IQ of Equatorial Guinea

Pic related: methodology, sample size, or soundness are not correlated with Lynn's acceptance of a study's result. The IQ result itself is the best predictor (i.e. he takes low results and throws out high ones)
Jelte M. Wicherts, Conor V. Dolan, Han L.J. van der Maas, The dangers of unsystematic selection methods and the representativeness of 46 samples of African test-takers, Intelligence, Volume 38, Issue 1, 2010, Pages 30-37, ISSN 0160-2896, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.intell.2009.11.003
>In light of all the available IQ data of over 37,000 African test-takers, only the use of unsystematic methods to exclude the vast majority of data could result in a mean IQ close to 70. On the basis of sound methods, the average IQ remains close to 80. Although this mean IQ is clearly lower than 100, we view it as unsurprising in light of the potential of the Flynn Effect in Africa (Wicherts, Borsboom, & Dolan, 2010) and common psychometric problems associated with the use of western IQ tests among Africans.

I'm from the middle east. I was given an IQ test when I was 10 or 11 years old (they picked 2 people from every school). It was done in an auditorium with a lot of other noisy children. They threw us a small booklet and told us: "this will not affect your grades. Try to guess the answers. The sooner you finish, the sooner you could leave".
Nobody cares about this shit here.
The only thing that matters is how well you do at school. For example in Iran even the girls graduate with honours as engineers. The Gulf countries send their kids abroad to the top universities to study STEM fields and they are largely successful.
