If two real numbers are different then there is another number in-between them, for example their arithmetic mean:
a < b => a+a < a+b < b+b => a < (a+b)/2 < b

a = x = 0.9999...
b = 1
(x+1)/2 = (1.9999...)/2 = 0.9999... = x uh oh
So (x+1)/2 = x and x = 1
