You might think so, but from what I've read, the g factor tends to emerge regardless of how you design the test. You can come up with all kinds of silly little tasks - counting vowels in meaningless strings of text, adding small numbers together quickly and accurately, whatever you like. Smart people will perform the tasks faster and more accurately.
This is known as "indifference of indicator," and it makes the case that IQ tests are really measuring something meaningful much more convincing, to me.

People can under perform on IQ tests, so its not always useful to use them to judge individuals, but across populations IQ scores have correlations with success, especially in (surprise surprise) complex fields of work. It even correlates with brain size.

The statistical correlation is stronger than many other correlations statistics reveals that everyone takes for granted. I find it hard to believe that people who vehemently deny IQ significance are simply so invested in the idea that they can't find any other way to cope with their low (or anticipated low) scores.

I feel like with enough practice or exposure to relevant topics, anyone with a 100IQ can rise to 150+ IQ. My IQ has been 135 for years and I've never attempted to actually practice for it. But I'm sure if I decided to train for IQ testing I could probably score near 160. So IQ testing is basically the familiarity with the topics which are relevant in academic performance in terms of deep understanding which allow people to manipulate the relevant systems (finances, career, innovation, etc) needed to be considered successful by the average person. I'm not sure if IQ really determines intelligence, I wish there was a test that tested peoples mental space size, so the ability to hold many different layers of information pertaining to one system and applying it logically to a problem. And the larger they can go through basic understanding and logic rather than forced memorization would IMO be a better approximation of intelligence.
