nobody in the US actually thinks imperial is better, we just use it because its what we are used to and have other shit to worry about rather than changing our units. also we use both systems, and also we only use metric in science. get over it, rest of the world

>> No.1037641

I grew up using Imperial. I use that for everyday things (I'm 5 foot 9 inches tall, etc etc).

For SCIENCE I use Metric just like everyone else.

Why is this such a big deal to everyone?

Okay, listen here. We're not rating the worth of systems of measurement on feelgood huggy-dovey does-it-work-for-you grounds. We're measuring it on the level of consistency and ease of calculations between its units.

I could make a system where one Quaggle is the length of my large toe's toenail, one Quiggle is 173 Quaggles, one Jiggawigga is 6,219 Quiggles, and the base unit for volume was the blood in a church mouse, but it would be a very impractical system to use. I would hate to use it myself.

you can count 12 object than you can 10.

Also, take this example of utility, suppose you have two sticks, one a yard and the other one meter, and you want to mark them in inches and centimeters. Making bisections is trivial with a compass and a straight edge, dividing into 3 is also possible. But for the meter stick, you'll eventually have to divide something into one fifths which can't be constructed quickly nor estimated accurately by eye.

inch is now defined exactly in cm (I believe it's 2.54 cm)

both are equally inferior to using natural units in base 16
