FUCK Calculus of Variations

The problem isn't you it's the unclear books and arrogant professors.

Is there any clear book? I've gotten A's in every math class up to real analysis and I feel like an irredeemable moron, I've tried gelfand but the notation is dense and my eyes just glaze over.

This board is really gone isn't it

Ive got A- in all my physics courses (i'm a physicist) but i've gotten all C in my math courses (Cal, LA, ODE, PDE, CA)

Physicists have to study commutative algebra?

Complex analysis

i'm a math major taking "complex analysis for physics" because it's only 2 credits and it's easy as fuck, barely any proofs

>> No.10357889

>>10357873
We have to take all of our math courses under the math department, it's literally full of proofs and i was never able to learn it decent enough to actually apply it to my studies, when talking about topological insulators i didn't understand shit once we got to the complex analysis portion of the lecture regarding said insulators.

There are places other than brazillian public universities which do that?

>derive the Euler Equation and boundary conditions, solve, find the first integral
[eqn]\min_{u(x)}\left[\int_{0}^{1} ((u')^2 \omega^2 u^2)dx +2u(1) \right],u(0) = 0[/eqn]
what the FUCK do i do

>> No.10357916

>>10357908
fuck it should be [eqn]((u')^2 - \omega^2 u^2)dx [/eqn]

Did you try looking at an example in your book and copying the steps?

>> No.10357925

>>10357924
i can get to the answer by copying but i have no idea what's going on and what 2u(1) even is

>> No.10357928

>>10357925
Literally the function u evaluated at 1.

>> No.10357944

>>10357928
okay i'm a brainlet
how about
>derive the euler equation and transversality condition, solve
[eqn] \min_{u(x),b}\int_{0}^{b}((u')^2-2u + x)dx,u(0)=1, u(b)=0[/eqn]
the version in the text didn't have u(b) = 0 and it skips steps
