ITT: Discussion of textbooks. Share your favorite/least favorite textbooks, why you came to that conclusion, and where to get them (for free preferably).

My go-to site for finding books is usually libgen, but often I can't find the exact ones that I'm looking for. Which sites do you use and why?

I - in the past - read my textbooks from the computer but it is inferior to a physical book on your desk. I now buy textbooks each and every time. Here are some good ones of mine. SICP and Lang are not "memes" by any stretch of the imagination, by the way. Computer Systems: A Programmers Perspective is quality if you want to learn C and lower-level programming in-depth.

>> No.10283812

>>10283783
1) read through a section first
2) do it again and take notes (paraphrase or actually just summarize the main ideas in your own words, no copying)
3) try to connect the info to stuff I already know (some books do this for you lol)
4) go through examples carefully, try to derive shit myself
5) grind out practice problems until there is no point in doing them anymore
6) most important: explain what I learned to my mom in the simplest terms possible, I guess if you had friends you could do that with them lmao
big pointer here: if something is complex and not immediately understood, I step back and go and try solving some vidya game puzzles that I was working on(you could do anything here: listen to a podcast, do easier work for another class, etc.). I'm basically running the concepts in the background of my mind without obsessing over it. Sometimes I would go to the gym and figure it out in my head, come back to the book/problem and just solve it in like 2 seconds. If you just focus on it too hard you can waste a lot of time and get frustrated. It helps that you time limited in these situations.
If anyone has better advice or stuff to add, please do. I'm just a plebeian looking for better ideas.

I had a look at this book by Whitaker. They say this was a very important book for Dirac. I bought a copy, some people including myself actually like to own physical books, but I do not have it now and I recently found a .djvu on libgen. I glanced through the book and I noticed that it reminded me of Gel'fand's "Calculus of Variations" with respect to how nicely and clearly everything was laid out. I bought that book too, but I don't have it with me. Gel'fand has ~a~lot~ of worked examples, and I noticed Whittaker reminded me of Gel'fand.

1.speed read through chapter/section
2.speed read again underlining key concepts (recognisable by the virtue of following explanation)
3.In order of appearance, write those concepts down verbatim and their corrosponding explanation and example
4.Rewrite each concept in their simplest concrete terms, with an original concrete example a five year old would comprehend completely. In other words, turn the abstract into the concrete and thus make associations between past knowledge and new knowledge so it can be easily remembered.

I can study a Latin grammar or a logic textbook with this method.

What made it click with me was reading "How to read a book" by Adler.

I don't know if it shows but I'm not in uni. I just used this when I did a short stint of self studying logic and Latin. Studying methodically works for me by keeping me on track.

why should your prof give half a shit about what edition book you're using? It's up to you whether you'll pass the course or not, and anyhow any changes between editions are usually very very minor.

>> No.10293486

>>10290010
You're missing the point. Some books that call themselves "Introductions" to "Algebra" aren't about HS/Khan tier "algebra" at all, but are actually college level texts on the theory of groups. Having a textbook will of course help you, but make sure you are getting one that is appropriate.

>> No.10293684

>>10293504

It really is just this >>10293640

More specifically, make sure you're only spending a minimum of time actually reading the chapters. Hell, if you're confident you'll not need to resell your textbooks in a hurry just annotate instead of taking any notes. Keep it minimal so you can do as many practice problems as possible.

It's like 10% reading and note taking, 5% recitation, and 85% practice problems. Good math textbooks do their teaching in the problems, not the text itself. Chapter text is just groundwork for the real lessons.
