What field of study has done the most for modern society? I don't want to to know what was the best 1000 years ago, but now in the 21st century.

medicine... we have drug therapies now for chronic diseases that would have been a death sentence literally or for quality of life in even the 1990s... biologics for arthritis, Crohn's, nasal Levadopa for Parkinson's just released I saw on the Michael fox foundation website.
You will say computer science/engineering, then you become sick and change your tune. you will stop caring about CS when your life is in question. it will always be medicine, because unless you die in a car crash or are murdered, you will start to care a lot once you're at the hospital and come to reality

soft sciences but it's because it's so complex that getting anything done at all is very hard.
In the 21st century, physics hasn't been doing a whole lot. we have been engineering improvements on what we already know about. Physics/math guys did so much in the early 20th century that the engineering guys have had decades of work to do.
if were talking about any field at all, finance and economics and politics has been extremely disgusting and unhelpful i guess(more so just unlikable) but it's not sci related so who cares.

those are encompassed in soft sciences. we are getting things accomplished in those areas but it's very hard to come up with something that the entire community agrees with because it is so complex. the radical feminist stuff isn't what women's studies actually is and I feel bad for anyone who has ever gone into it with a genuine desire to study females in a soft science. Soft sciences are complex and being soft, they are mostly subjective and it is hard to predict anything, so you can have a whole lot of cooks and radicals who actually have an audience because it isn't a hard science that has defined parameters etc...
hardcore sci related, I would probably be physics or math if you want to be general. engineering has had a LOT on their plate to digest and innovate with for the last 100 years. I feel like the pendulum may finally start to move into the opposite direction again soon as Moore's law is definitely coming to an end and we need some serious breakthroughs to tackle certain problems if we want to keep moving.

this is like a race. engineers are the runners and scientists are the people on the sidelines cheering them on and giving the cups of water if they run out of energy/overheat. scientists need to give engineers some new tools to innovate more, so the engineers have new tools to discover more

>scientists need to give engineers some new tools to innovate more, so the scientists have new, more accurate tools to discover more
that's what I meant to write

we need to work together or we will never get anything done. the squabbling between scientists and engineering or physics and math or whatever is such a dumb thing, stupid human archaic thinking of preferring your tribe over outsiders even when it doesn't benefit anyone.

imagine a modern car being designed and manufactured if the different departments (physics, math, CS, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science etc) had such goofy, dumb attitudes or perspectives. it would never even reach the design stage.

not related to the thread but it's something to say.

But Experimental Physics fields also waste a Huge amount of Money to build the installations that run the experiments.

No such thing. The science behind rockets is very simple and has been understood for a very long time. What has done all the exciting stuff with rockets is engineering bigger/safer/more-efficient rockets.

>CEO: Shit guys so our new sweat sho-, I mean production facility in Vietnam poisoned a river, killing a large portion of the population nearby. Anyone have any ideas how to sweep this under the rug?

>Marketing Exec: Lets hire a bunch of black people and some SJW type women.

>CEO: Marketing Exec, we're already going to lose a ton of money over this, why would you want to throw more fuel on the fire?

>Marketing Exec: Well, I have a buddy over at CNN who can make sure our new diversity policy trumps any news about the whole river thing for at least 5 years. Everyone will think we're super progressive as well.

>CEO: Fucking brilliant, just enough time for us to all move to different companies before the other shit we fucked up pops up as well.

>CFO: We can probably get some funds from the government and/or corporate tax exemptions so we probably would make more money. Get the stock prices up before we jump ship so we can ride the golden parachute and collect extra couple of million a year at the next company we all move to.

>Marketing Exec: I don't want the secretary I'm fucking in HR to get raped any more than she does on her tax return, lets create a new department to take care of this, and create a role: Chief Diversity Officer. Oh, and I presume that none of you pay taxes?

>Everyone laughs and proceed to do coke off the interns tits

Fields that improve medical knowledge and medicine are the only studies to have improved well being as of late. That would mean that medical oriented STEM fields have helped society the most, but non medical related STEM fields have also decreased modern well being the most.
