https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/09/health/unethical-experiments/index.html Meanwhile in China, ethics has been thrown out the window. Would you genetically modify babies?

Yep. But I don't want to have to move to China to do it.

I don't know. He has a bunch of armed guards around his apartment. Not sure if they're his or the governments. He could face bribery and corruption charges. Hopefully that puts halt on that kind of experimentation there. He removed the CCR5 gene, which should make them immune to HIV, but has the potential to make them more vulnerable to influenza. As it stands, this kind of experimentation is basically flying blind and still in its infancy.

What is your reasoning?

But it is ethical. It's just not *your* ethics.

Then what are your ethics that would make this fine? Is just a matter of breaking a few eggs to make an omelette?

If health and longevity are good, then modifying babies to be healthier and longer lived is good. If physical fitness is good, then modifying babies to be more physically fit is good. If intelligence and education are good, then modifying babies to be more intelligent and adaptive is good.

Given that you disagree, tell me about the dystopia you want to live in.

There should be universal laws and rules about it. But I kind of think it's inevitable in the end, sooner or later. The Chinese will use it and then, other nations will use it in order to keep up with them. And there are some good things, like being able to prevent diseases and create guaranteed healthy, intelligent offspring. The risk is that it will widen the gap between rich and poor further. We all want people to be healthy, intelligent and fit. Or at least we should want it. And as long as there are certain rules that prevent people/nations from exploiting that for whatever purposes, it's a potential great asset to humanity and at least worth a thought. Sooner or later, it will be discussed broadly.

For wanting to genetically modify babies? Betterment of the species, evolutionary manifest destiny etc. Ideally all of humanity should have equal access to gene mods or things start looking like a hack YA dystopia.

For not wanting to move to China? Obvious reasons.

It's not "his" apartment. It's a government apartment, aka fancy prison cell.

>widen the gap between rich and poor
If anything it should shrink it. Gene technology is advancing faster than literally any other tech. What cost millions only a few years ago now costs less than a video game. Gene sequencing and editing will continue to get cheaper. With people being born with higher iqs they will be able to get better jobs.

>> No.10282960

>People with an iq of 85 or below make up 70% of the people on welfare, 75% of violent crime committees and can’t even get a job in the modern economy

>> No.10282990

>>10282953
Well, that would be way better. But I think it's reasonable to fear that the first of those procedures are going to be very expensive and therefore only affordable for the upper class.

However, in the best case, it gets way cheaper afterwards and everyone can do it. That would actually make us all more equal, you are right.

>> No.10283003

>>10282960
Exactly. If it changes things to the better, why not take the matter in your own hands? People had the same fears when new technologies became available in the past: The airplane, trains, modern medicine etc.

A friend of mine that I discussed with said: "But as bad as it is: Stupid people are needed because someone has to do low-paying jobs". He may be not wrong, but I hope that KI/robotic workforce will change that.

Some people may fear a population that only consists of intelligent people and we will never be totally equal, but generally, it's a fucking utopia with so much potential that dismissing it automatically for ethical reasons is ridiculous. But don't worry, it will only take some time until most people realize that.

>> No.10283021

>>10282990
I think a government push to help subsidize it could help. Spend literally hundreds of thousand of dollars on a sub 80 iq retard that will never contribute to society or pay for either gene editing or gene sequencing to determine the smartest embryo and use that to make sure the kid born won’t need as much assistance, in the long run it will save money.

>> No.10283025

Damn I wish he modified me to be HIV resistant. I'd go to Africa to raw dog hookers for $2.

The real question is: Now that these babies are alive, when they grow up, should we expose them to HIV to see if it worked?

Most stupid people don’t even have jobs, when I say stupi I mean 85 iq or lower. Have the smart kids do crappy jobs while they work their way through college like i did.

only if they're aborted before they come to term, so they can be studied. We can test new gene modifications faster this way.
