Would it be possible to sustain life?

We'd be in a binary system.

not enough gravity to keep an atmosphere.

>> No.10255807

It'd probably have to be really cold to keep it's atmosphere.

See there's a thing called Jean's escape, where gas particles reach escape velocity because of thermal energy. Because the velocity of particles follows the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution; [math]V_{Therm}\approx{\frac{V_{Esc}}{6}}[/math]

So terraforming would not be a "set it and forget it" thing, it would need lots of careful monitoring and constant supplying.

Underground? You bet!
On the surface? Nope.
Domes with proper radiation shielding? Maybe.

What's better? A dome or a bunker?

Bunker. Don't want to kill everyone because Jaimie is learning to drive a rover today and drove into the dome.
You can make domes strong enough to be durable but you're always fighting an uphill battle and they'll always fail catastrophically, while a bunker is easy to compartmentalize.

Not true. Titan has a dense atmosphere than we do but is only 80% more massive. Luna could hold something, but only if protected from the solar wind.

>> No.10256492

no one would live there unless you were never cming back to earth or want to spend 6hr a day working out.

I dunno the Moon’s surface could amuse me for years. I can spend ages checking out vistas and the unique texture of rocks.

Titan holds its atmosphere because it's so cold.

I have performed the calculation involved as part of a homework exercise. If Titan had the same sort of atmosphere as Earth, it would be lost pretty quickly.

>If Titan had the same sort of atmosphere as Earth
If it had the same atmosphere temperature, yes.
Titan's atmosphere is more like Earth's than any other atmosphere in the solar system. Mostly nitrogen, has a defined troposphere, has clouds and a hydrological cycle, etc. Really the two biggest differences are the temperature and the scale height; to get ~2 times Earth sea level pressure on the surface of a world with 15% the gravitational pull you need to pile up a LARGE column of air, I believe the mesosphere ends about 600 km up.

I wouldn't be overly concerned with it. If your colony depended on the integrity of your dome you'd constantly be monitoring it and performing upkeep.
Gravity is so low that you don't need to worry about it collapsing on itself unless you made something truly monstrously grand.
I couldn't imagine your dome being a single piece of anything either. You would probably want replaceable panels so that if you did need to take a piece out you could without worrying about decompressing the entire bubble.
The bigger problem with a domed city, as I see it, is that for half of a Lunar day you're in on the other side of the terminator so your dome might get pretty chilly.
I also wonder if your dome would have to be so shielded and reflective that you couldn't really see through it very well. If you don't have a nice scenic view, you might as well be living underground.
If I was in charge of off setting up a lunar city I'd start in a big lava dome and expand from there.

The Moon doesn't actually have a "proper name." Sort of like the earth and the sun.
They're just called "whateverthey'recalledinyourlanguage." It makes sense if you think about it, no one can claim discovery rights, or ultimate ownership of the whole thing.

It doesn't have enough gravity to keep an atmosphere in the long term without maintaining it.

It could hold onto an atmosphere for hundreds of thousands of years unaided and under very minimal maintenance it could hold it indefinitely.

You're going to be using subterranean (sublunar?) construction no matter what. It's still a good idea to have a place where people can go to enjoy some open space, even if it was just a big open space park where you try to amend lunar regolith into something you could grow plants in.

Build a big open bunker ;) I can think of some useful dome concepts, if you built a concrete dome it'd probably be cheaper to make it in a single piece, and then for the sake of redundancy build some other structures within the dome that can withstand collapse. I think that kind of nesting arrangement might be the way to go.

Fun fact: that Acadamie francaise had a similar issue, atterrir is the verb to land with a root in terre, Earth. So obviously to land on the moon is alunir https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/alunir

Sublunarean?

You can if you plant a flag on it, put a military base on it, and stay king of the hill if anyone tries to nudge you off. That is what the Chinese are doing on the dark side of the moon right now.
