we would be talking about them as if they were on the same level as Newton and Einstein if not for racism

yet 4chan tards like to promote racism

Calm down, Rosa. They were simple mathematicians not science revolutionizing geniuses.

it's quite an entertaining movie, and well made. you should watch it.
they were 3 of a large group of nasa employees, black women who calculated trajectories and other such mathematics for launches/design. these 3 women in particular were able to do more than just be "calculators" who found the trajectories and actually be part of the nasa design process. while their "achievements" are not groundbreaking, they still have quite interesting and meaningful stories considering the environment they were in.
>>10242231
yeah, but no one really knew that they were mathematicians at all. the movie isn't trying to say they were geniuses. they were just rather skilled compared to how they were perceived.

just to clarify for both of you, op's assertion that they are comparable to newton or einstein is bait. again, that's not the message of the movie. the movie is trying to say that they're comparable to any other apollo program nasa rocket scientist (which is still pretty damn good).

Stop it, get some help. Blacks are not less than whites, we should not expect any less of them based on their skin color. There should exist a black who can match the achievements of Euler, but unfortunately because we lower standards for blacks that hypothetical black man will never come.

Not even just that they were skilled, but more that they were passionate about their work. It wasn't just about doing what you were told, but in having high motivation to see the work done through to the end, regardless of any complications. Like with gurl taking her work to the bathroom cuz she didn't want the time to be wasted.

I liked the part where the dude knocked down the bathroom sign. Ain't got no time for this political shit, gotta land on the moon. He'd rather ask for forgiveness than permission so he just does what he thinks he needs to do to succeed.

No.

Did they discover conic sections? We talk about Apollonius and Archimedes because that's what they did.

What about providing a space to consider the co-ordinates conic sections? Almost everyone knows Descartes and his accomplishments.

What about establishing a mechanical basis for motion based on those conic sections? Galileo, Newton, and Leibniz all did tremendous work.

Then there are others, like Copernicus and Kepler--and even a bunch of mudslimes like al-Farazi who did lots for astronomy. People talk about them, too.

And then we have Einstein, whose genius gave us the gedankenexperiment and relativity.

What do they all have in common?

Sure, you can say race, but that's hardly if at all a tenable claim. You have to look to an alternative for why these women are not "talked about as if they were on the same level." What could that alternative possibly be?

Here's my guess: They were working within systems that had already been established to perform their calculations. If they had paradigmatically innovated the system like the other thinks I listed have, then yes, they would be regarded on the same level. Because that is earth-shattering, unadulterated mathematical genius.

These women may be gifted mathematicians, original thinkers with an over-abundance of natural talent and diligently cultivated skill, but that does not place them on the same level as the geniuses that gave us conic sections, dynamics, helio-centrism, coordinate planes, infinitesimal calculus, mechanical physics, thought experiments, and relativity.

Two existed and worked as number-crunchers in the same complex that Von Braun worked in. They did not have any hand in anything directly related to space (the filmmaker's logic is that we can't know that they didn't have a hand in it) and did not work together (again, the filmmakers has stated that we can't be sure they didn't know each other).

The third one (the fat one on the right) is entirely fabricated.

For anybody interested, the book is infinitely superior to the movie, and is actually quite interesting. It explains the role and significance of these "computers," what they actually did in the space race, and how they lived without the distortions introduced in the film script.

Not him but it's typically a good idea to archive anyone working in the field especially on big projects. A number of important research has utilized obscure or less spotlighted individuals and their work. You don't necessarily need to care about their life or hardships per se but it's important to be aware of any work they may have contributed for reference sake.
