I dunno about physics but UMich is a super nice place for math.
There are a ton of top-tier faculty doing cool shit there, the city is nice, climate is good (fuck califags, winter is necessary for survival), and it's actually not as hard to get in as the ranking would imply because the school is really big so they accept a lot of students.
