>Self-handicapping is when people who have been made aware of their own incompetence or probable future failure, deliberately impose handicaps on themselves—on the standard model, in order to give themselves an excuse for failure. To make sure they had an excuse, subjects reduced preparation times for athletic events, studied less, exerted less effort, gave opponents an advantage, lowered their own expectations, even took a drug they had been told was performance-inhibiting...
Chillingly accurate
This is quite literally what I have done to myself this semester
Didn't study, didn't give myself time for projects, drank and smoked and played vidya while going entire weeks without doing even one iota of work all the while thinking about how much work I'm blowing off, then freaking out and turning in garbage (or just not turning it in)
About to go flunk an exam in 2 hours and my life will be completely ruined after that.
But I have "room for improvement" because if I didn't smoke etc I'd have passed the course easily.
jesus fuck

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-handicapping
>Sameer Babu M, and Selvamari S (2018) defines: Self-Handicapping is a process of employing unique verbal and/or non-verbal strategies of carelessness on, lethargy in, and withdrawal from the academic duties and responsibilities which leads to lower academic standards".

> Results show that Ss use alcohol to self-handicap when denied access to a performance-enhancing option. With important qualifications, these data support the self-handicapping hypothesis of human drinking behavior.

I do math better in my sleep -- objectively. I used to work in a physics technology lab that did a lot of fluid mechanics. I once had a dream that I went to a job interview and at that interview there was a fountain that was exhibiting the exact problem we were working on, and I could see the equations change as the water flowed. Just floating in the air like bubbles. And could even see the distributions change as color coded areas of density.

I woke up. Wrote down what I dreamed. And it worked. It was exactly right. I don't think it was ever included in the final published paper, but it's probably still sitting in a lab notebook somewhere at the university.
