well he has moved more into information theory over the last couple of years, but i feel it is more to do with him wanting to find a more concrete basis for string theory than to "move away" from string theory.

of course i can't read his (insanely powerful) mind, but i can't believe he would give up on string theory just yet. he said at one point it was his "life's work" and according to what he's been publishing, he hasn't come to any epiphany on why to give it up.

then again, he is almost assuredly smarter than me, so i can't figure out his thought process, but i find it highly unlikely that he gave up string theory. i think his recent transitions toward looking at condensed matter and quantum information theory are more just a "branching out" resulting from the apparent failure of string theory to materialize into a predictive theory, in an attempt to revive string theory from its semi-necrotic state and give it some new life
