Hey, i'm wondering if you can substitute black powder in a muzzleloader for a smaller amount of smokeless powder.
Whenever i look something up on it its just people shouting "DO NOT USE SMOKELESS POWDER!", but i feel this is just a dummy rule for dumbasses loading with smokeless instead of blackpowder accidentally. My thinking is if you put less smokeless powder, there will be the same amount of pressure as a larger amount of black powder, or because it burns faster, wont push the heavier roundball out as effectively?

Not gonna research this too much but I feel that it could be because smokeless is more sensitive to shock than GP. So when you would try to load up the gun you would have more chances of misfiring onto your self.

Go ahead and try it out my dude :^)

IF your breach is strong enough, this won't be a problem. The reason most old black powder guns (and early smokeless, now that I think about it) don't work with modern powder is because the metallurgy used back then was shit, so they couldn't handle the higher pressures.

You should load a tiny amount of dynamite for extra power.

Theoretically, yes. Realistically, NO.

This sort of thing has been done before but if you even have to ask if it's plausible then do NOT attempt it. Smart people who know how to make gunpowder properly (aka chemists) can do the calculations beforehand and do the necessary work to ensure the hammer will always create enough of a spark/impact to properly ignite the powder.

Go right ahead and blow your head up.

Its not a simple linear problem. Its not just pressure, its the pressure curve - over time. Its the momentum of the bullet, rifling etc. All the different factors have effects that can be proportional to changes in different ways. So its not something you can provide a conversion chart that will work with all guns. Some BP guns do fine with a lower charge of smokeless, some don't even with the same charge of smokeless, even when they use the same amount of BP. Even if the second uses more BP. So you'd have to test it out with every single gun.
Also why is this not on /k/?

Tfw you set the powder off just ramming the bullet in

I have read all the shit too but you seem like a responsible dude. If you're not worried about f'ing up a priceless family heirloom or something, just go for it. I haven't messed with muzzle loaders so much but I've done all kinds of shit that there was no rule book for like making weird cartridges out of common ones and trying own load data. Never blew a finger off.

That hasn't been a problem since Sir Frederick Augustus Abel fixed it.

Yes it is, so don't be one of them.

Yes but did Abel fix it for GP or smokeless powder?

go ask /k/
luckily, I'm /k/
Short answer: fucking hell no
Long answer: it's possible but you need to do a bunch of math and the people who can do that math aren't going to tell you how to do it so you'll just blow yourself up, you idiot
they make smokeless black powder substitutes, go use one of those

specifically, guncotton which became smokeless
modern smokeless isn't shock sensitive

This is 100% incorrect.

Just go shoot that shit and let us know how it went. Don't be a pussy or a dumbass.
