How come domestic dogs can range from small to big but domestic cats are always small little fellas?
Especially when big cats are bigger than wolves.

big cats are more trouble than they're worth, sure they'd make good hunting buddies for example but they're energy needs would mean that they'd need most of the game for themselves unlike hunting dogs which can make do on scraps

and small cats are in contrast very inexpensive since even if you dont feed them they can manage for themselves

dogs were originally favored for their work characteristics, so a certain amount of form was selected for function, and this happened consistently over a long time. it set a good stage for mixing mutant and recessive genes to get show dogs as well.
since cats are not work animals, there wasn't as much focus on breeding, so not as much variation.
the other thing is going up in size is much more difficult than going down, so cats are never going to display as much variation in size regardless.

>> No.10140962

>>10140202
Because cats are never really domesticated. How house cats behave is how stray, and wild cats behave for the most part. If you have ever had a cat you may have noticed that, occasionally, for no apparent reason, they lose their shit and claw, bite, or otherwise attack you. This would be a huge problem if they were large enough to do any damage(see Seigfried and Roy), but since domestic cats are tiny most people just find it cute. Cats lack a pack mentality, and thus can never be 100% committed to their owners. They may like you, but if it came down to their survival, they would kill you if necessary. Dogs, on the other hand, are descendants of wolves who have strong pact bonds. Dogs have also been artificially selected by humans for thousands of years to be less aggressive, and more loyal. The pact mentality is what results in some dogs who will murder people who try to attack their owner, even at the cost of their own life. Large cats will never be a common pet, because every once in a great while, large cats will kill their owners when they forget to feed them. Not because they are angry, but because they are hungry and give zero fucks where their food comes from.

Hahahaha yeah sure. what >>10140853 said.
They always have a reason to do that, you just don't understand their mentality, that's all. The key is being able to tell what pisses them off and when they're okay with what you're doing with them.
The part about dogs it's true - wolves inherited this characteristic from wolves. They defend their pack as if it was their own pups and they are capable of counting their human friends as one of their own pack.

not really, cats aren't good pest control animals because they do what they want and you can hardly teach them otherwise (and arguably they're a pest themselves).

Usually the existence of humans destroys any nonpet animal areas, so the only ones that can live there anymore are humans, pets, and pests.

>Two main theories are given about how cats were domesticated. In one, people deliberately tamed cats in a process of artificial selection as they were useful predators of vermin.[45] This has been criticized as implausible, because the reward for such an effort may have been too little; cats generally do not carry out commands and although they do eat rodents, other species such as ferrets or terriers may be better at controlling these pests.[30] The alternative idea is that cats were simply tolerated by people and gradually diverged from their wild relatives through natural selection, as they adapted to hunting the vermin found around humans in towns and villages.
