Where my fellow golden bears at.

Degree: BA math (pure), junior
Pros:
>Math/CS/engineering departments have a very collaborative atmosphere , the cutthroat reputation only applies to pre-med and pre-haas (business).
>World class professors, many of whom actually know how to teach despite this being a public research uni. Many professors are also much better at teaching small upper-division classes populated with math majors than massive lower division ones full of premed and cs scum.
>As a junior, I have 0 trouble enrolling in whatever upper division classes I want. They're generally full a couple weeks after my enrollment time though.
>My parents are rich so it's nice to only pay 13k for college instead of the full 60k they would have paid at private.
>The departmental advisors are very good and accessible, the L&S (college) advisors are literally useless.
>No spics or niggers

Cons:
>Way too many asians
>A few professors really can't teach for shit, but I've avoided all of them thus far by asking around and ratemyprofessor.
>I hate seeing my retarded friends in CS get offered obscene amounts of money ($40+ an hour) just to jerk off as interns in palo alto/menlo park.

I could suggest at least 2 reasons.
One is raw numbers. No first-world country has a population remotely close to the USA. Russia is the closest and they have less than half, and Russia is pretty underdeveloped. By the time you get down to the next ones (Germany, UK, etc.) you're at like 1/4 to 1/6 the population. America is also fucking huge, so you need to have a lot of universities just to service everyone.
There's also the fact that while Europe spent a large portion of the 20th century reaming itself in the ass the US was sitting a safe distance away collecting well-educated immigrants. So while European universities were piecing themselves back together US universities were already snowballing.

>> No.10139693

>>10139667
American universities are better, our public secondary and primary schooling is inferior. But as >>10139687 points out, we have a larger population, thus also many more proles who will forgo college or get degrees at trash universities for low paying professional and technical work, or will simply use the degree to break into management or sales somewhere. The elite schools in America are a class unto themselves and really only a few schools in the UK, and France can compare to our public ivies and the ivy league proper.

Decent for undergraduate education
Their Grad curriculum is lacking
Im a senior and have taken all their offerings: Functional analysis, Harmonic analysis, PDE, Complex analysis. Professors are good. Most are ivy league or places like UMich/UCLA educated. I feel they go over the material slower because they feel the students aren't as strong.

Overall Im happy with the education I received.

Not that person but I was also a WA resident. Be aware that uw you have to apply to the general school and then apply into most majors. Majors like computer science have super low acceptance rate and even math has about 50% acceptance rate. If you apply make sure you know what you want to do and apply for direct admit into the major you want. Stuff like physics, pure biology, and geological sciences are still open majors though. It would be a waste to come here, rack up debt only to get rejected from a major and then transfer out

I went there because I got rejected from every UC I applied to except Riverside (UCSD, UCI, UCD, and UCSC) and live in San Diego. Though even had I got into Santa Cruz I still would've gone here. Not having to pay for housing plus the generally low CSU low tuition/fees cost meant it was really cheap, only a couple thousand a year after federal aid, and I graduated with no debt.

Because it really depends what you want to do. Yes, prestigious universities are good, but if you want to go to graduate school it almost literally doesn't matter where you do undergrad as long as you do really well. Also even in graduate school it depends who your adviser is and they may not all be at top schools.

For example someone I know went to Princeton for undergrad studies and is now doing a Ph.D at Boston College (yes it's a good school, but probably not known outside America etc.)

The program is pretty okay, I think there are few I'd like more, if any. It wasn't quite what I expected with CAD and machines and all that, but I'm learning stuff. I was actually in the middle of writing a post on /fit/ about my shitty day today. I butchered a presentation, but it's not really that I'm caring about.

Anyway the people here are good characters with good futures. Good humans. However I feel very different and don't vibe very well past acquaintance status, I have one person I connect meaningfully with.

I'm sort of from white trash but with a lot of insight and before university I've been faking stuff really well with tasteful clothes etc but I just don't give a shit about social signalling anymore. The people here are rich, mostly upper-middle class, well-raised and well-socialised throughout their lives. But also shallow without them knowing it. Not only do they judge my visual character but they also judge the depths of my character. I've been having problems and issues and I'm not always doing so well, but people see surfaces not stories, surely my flaws are a failure of character, to them. But really I'm always improving, quicker than these people are, and I compare myself with my past constantly and feel pride all the time of where I'm headed. But their lingering eyes make it known I'm different, alien, robot.. Some days I wake up with a lot of energy and feel good and laugh and stuff but I get brought down because I don't act like these people want people to act, maybe they just know so much more about socializing than I do, anyhow I'm tired of being judged every time I let myself be myself

Prof. Feld (physics) is probably the best teacher i have ever encountered.

I wouldn't have chosen Tech, honestly, but I think that's more to do with it being in the middle of fucking nowhere. Raider Rash is a thing because fucking is the only source of entertainment in the flat nowhere that is Lubbock. No clue how the academics are.

Definitely apply elsewhere, though. I know UT and A&M have pretty good engineering programs, and UH has the benefit of being in the middle of Houston, which would definitely be a plus for ChemE.

The courses of the one in Milano are way more difficult than the one here and when they'll finish their bachelor's they'll basically be viewed the same way and both judged on grades. Milano faggots like to pretend they have higher employability or "status" but as soon as you go outside Italy it's all the same to them. (at least in terms of BCs). oh shit, yeah I don't know you. I just figured I would 'cause I was at the science campus and there aren't a lot people there, but you're downtown, right? Concordia is actually not so bad if you study chem/bio/psych/comm and you get to work at the science campus. It's really pretty and quiet, and not too crowded. I would get out ASAP if I was in a program at the downtown campus though. That place is a shithole.
Interesting anecdote: I actually met both the president and the chancellor. The president is a smart/nice guy, but the chancellor was some old real-estate fatcat who was basically given the position because he runs the real-estate firm that developed all the converted mall shithole buildings in the downtown campus. He was so oblivious that he went on and on about how proud he was of the universally-loathed Faubourg building and how he thought we should just abandon the beautiful science campus altogether. It's because of people like him that I think the science campus should secede from Concordia. They should abstract CS, kick out psych, and rename themselves the Loyola Institute of Science or something.
