What's a good textbook progression guide for someone who wants to understand modern software to a reasonable level? Preferably for unix.

For reference I have a BA in EE, and I understand hardware and the physical side of computer architecture well enough. What's still magic to me is operating systems, kernels, the internet, and how things talk to each-other when you run programs. Almost everything software related is a black box that I don't know how to reason theoretically about.

I also don't want to accomplish something specific with this knowledge, I just want to see more of the picture of how it fits together. I'm looking for something preferably more technical than heuristic flow charts, but also isn't just a bunch of detailed specific instructions that miss the forest for the trees.
