How do so many people fall for this meme?

>fierce competition and continuous pressure from the outside
There's only really "fierce competition" for tenure-track jobs, which is understandable because those are really nice positions.
They may not be the most prestigious thing you'll ever do but there are generally enough postdocs to go around for new researchers. If you can't even find a half-decent postdoc after your PhD you are in the bottom 10% of your field and probably shouldn't have even got that far.
>work up to 15 hours a day
I have "up to" a million dollars in my bank too. Nobody works 15 hours a day on even a semi-regular basis except for the poor autists who went into lab sciences.
>requires extreme amounts of talent, luck, and social networking skills
everything decent in life requires luck and social skills.
Sure, you need to be Jesus H. Christ to be offered tenure at Stanford, but there are universities outside of the top 10 too. Lots of them. If you really think being an academic requires "extreme talent", please go take a look at the average shitter occupying a professorship at a group 2 or 3 university.

I just want a Ph.d for bragging rights. Then I'll get a job. Whatever.

I want a Ph.d. Then I want to get a nice comfy managerial public sector job. Maybe a science advisor or something. That would be cool.

All you sci fags need to spend years in a work camp.

It is not only about money or security.

Science (or even better, math) is the best thing a human being can do in his/her life.

Right after art, of course.
