Why don't we just desalinate the ocean instead of worry about potable water?

>> No.10067442

Mostly because its expensive to desalinate water. It takes more energy than it's worth. Its literally cheaper to pipe it in front somewhere else.

>> No.10067473

>>10067465
Then it would work great. It's not about finding a cheap way to desalinate water. That's impossible, it takes a lot of energy. The best course of action would be to find a more efficient way to make and store energy.

>> No.10067490

>>10067473
why is it hard?

>put water in container inside an even larger container
>boil smaller container
>evaporates into steam
>salt left behind
>steam condenses and drips into larger container

fucking there I solved the water crisis

Oh shit, you're right! I can't believe NO ONE has ever thought of it. Are you dumb? Will you just Google "how much energy to boil a cup of water"? Quit swinging your bike helmet around, like you're not being a nuisance. It would be far more beneficial to yourself if you dont need someone to spoon feed you every random question that pops into your head. Especially when you clearly lack a fundamental understanding of physics.

That's because there's nothing to be said, stupid. He thought he solved the grand mystery of desalination without first understanding the fundamental basics behind it. I didn't wander into this thread to hold his hand while he flailed around like a retard. There is a reason mass desalination isnt a thing, and it wasn't because no one had ever thought of it before.

apart from the massive energy requirements for desalination, there are two other problems:

where to put the concentrated brines left over.
inb4 "just dump it in the ocean"
an influx of hypersaline brine at A SINGLE location will fuck over local ecosystems, including ones that fisheries depend on.

maintenance.
really salty water is corrosive to most metals, meaning you're constantly having to replace parts.

desalination is only worth it in places where there is no fucking drinkable water but lods of emone, like Saudi Arabia.

>> No.10068525

>>10067490
With efficient system, you get around 1litre per hour per square meter of solar cell. With my calculations being correct, this is 2CM of rain per day. That means if you have area and half of area is covered by greenhouses cooled by preheating water to evaporate and another half is used to desaltify water, you could probably run decent aquaponic system to grow tomato.

If you evaporate by tidal power, you can go really huge and greens.

What's the benefit of it? It cost money and people who have them are not giving niggers for free.

>> No.10068533

Local increase of salinity would not happen.
Energy is not that much of a problem.

Problem would be that water is useless without fertilizer and there are fish in the sea.

For drinking water it's really simple to make a tidal wave system that would make you clear water. It's not even noticeable at 0.000N that increase in Salination.

>> No.10068539

>>10067848

With an unlimited source of salt water, like the ocean, there's no reason to hyperconcentrate the salt before dumping it back into the ocean; you could literally evaporate 10% into potable water before returning the remaining 90% without brine forming.
