They're designed that way. More time would just mean more questions or harder ones

you two might have learning disabilities, i finish almost all my exams easily and i go to a top 5 uni math program

what's the graduation rate at your uni?
over 95%? 98%?

i am a grad student in a top physics department and the academic standards here are a joke

>> No.10068207

>>10068200
the graduation rate? what does that matter?
idk about a graduation rate specifically for math, but i meant that our math department is one of the top 5 in the world (as is our math bachelors).

I'm in easy classes so I finish early. The one hardcore test I ever took, had to pay for, I didn't even finish half. Got a good/ok score though.

If you know the material well enough (wrath the test is trying to test) you shouldn't be wasting time getting started and doing much novel thinking, you should have the intuition of how to get started and be able to think ahead of where you're writing or where you're going next. If you aren't, you haven't studied enough to actually processed the material.

>Caring about le answer questions quickly with no support material meme.

The only type of exam that should be given in decent universities are the ones you take home, with very challenging questions not copied from question banks, and that you have a lot of time to do.

Either that or oral exams about topics that you have a few weeks to prepare to.

Whenever students come to my lab showing me big numbers from exams I always ask them to read a few papers and present them to me and you can see right through the farse.

The problem I can fucking do the harder questions. A lot of my classmates. I can solve ""all"" problems but I solve them more slowly. Many of my classmates solve the test, leave before the time limit, but they fucked up all their problems and can't solve the hardest ones. It's really frustrating knowing that if everyone was given extra time, my grade would increase a lot more than my classmates grades would.

Studying maths here, what the hell do I do?

Just get better at it LOL. It’s math man, nothing is stopping you from practicing until you can finish a test in 15 minutes.

How do you prevent them from paying someone else to do them?

Speed is a factor here. Someone who can do X, Y, and Z but takes forever isn't necessarily more productive, and might well be less productive, than someone who struggles with Z but can do X and Y very quickly. The test is working as designed.

If you're an undergrad, remember that you have very little to brag about unless you were an IMO champ or something, especially in the US, where college admissions are mostly based on the overall attraction of your application to the institution as opposed to subject talent, with the appeal mostly being dominated by essays and extra curricular achievements alongside general academic brilliance

>had a class on functional programming in hasklel
>the content is easy as heck, but everyone seems to be struggling
>test one
>one hour test
>finish in four minutes
>96%
>average class grade ends up being ~45%
I ddon't get it. I'm a brainlet. Why was that class so hard for everyone else? It wasn't even in depth.
Does functional programming just melt normie brains or something?

Are you sure you understand how this shit works?
In my advanced undergrad math exams we would get problems that are impossible to solve in the allotted if you aren't prepared for them. The way to prepare is to do all the tutorial classes and home works and understand the ideas behind those problems. Those exercise problems usually take up to 2 hours each to solve. Then during the exam you get some problem that uses the same ideas and you are supposed to be able to solve it in 20 minutes because you already solved the homework/tutorial problem and know the basic idea.

Also, practice never hurts, even if you already know what I typed above. Do more problem sets and you will get quicker.

You are probably just used to programming and they are newbies. I know I used to be like that too. Then I did a programming class with fellow math students and suddenly everyone was easily on par with me.

This was a third year programming paper. Everyone in it had been through two and a half years of programming papers.
It didn't even include anything like algorithms or data structures at all, because there's a seperate class for that.
Literally just
>how to use haskell
>how to read "learn you a hasklel"

I've got 25% extra time because of my dsypraxia yet usually when I'm actually prepared and haven't procrastinated I can still do the exam in the normal time. It's all about revision.

>> No.10071119

>needing extra time for dyspraxia
How bad have you got it? Is the extra time just due to difficulty recording answers, or is there moer that you struggle with?
I also have dyspraxia, but I've never been sure how bad any of my symptoms were.

>> No.10071131

>>10071000
Hence why you don't need extra time, you need to study more. Not saying anything against you, but many people don't learn to deal with their issues and need special accommodations when they shouldn't need to. I feel like every course they take a special accommodation in should be asterisked on their transcript and the employer can decide whether or not they care.

I took a compilers class. The exams were really easy, and I throught my proofs of correctness fell out pretty well. I ended up getting a 93 on the exam (forgot to study one problem, so I ended up fudging the details) while everyone else got an average of 64. This changed when I took graduate level courses. I think the answer is that undergrads do the darnedest things on tests, because the same was with my real analysis class.
