The purpose of all life can be deduced from observation: to be born, to survive, to try and reproduce and die. Life starts as simple single cellular organisms - fairly efficient at gathering food and reproducing.

As time goes on, life becomes more complex - the complexity is due to life forms becoming more efficient at gathering resources. Reproduction is more of a derivative as life becomes more and more complex.

Eventually, evolution reaches a plateau and the apex species has not discovered farming (dinosaurs) and they get wiped out by a catastrophic event or it has discovered farming (humans). If the apex species discovers farming, then the stage for the species extinction is a mathematical certainty.

Farming ensures that 20% of the population can feed the 100% - leaving 80% to do what they want. However, millions of years of genome selection forces the 80% to play the game of life - gather resources and reproduce. As time goes on, the 80% make society more and more complex in technology and culture - reproduction becomes more and more of a derivative act. The primary requirement of sex is not reproduction, but acceptance, intimacy, fulfilling peer pressure, power, etc. The majority of the species loses sight of the purpose of life.

At this stage, natural selection favors those individuals who prefer economic and physical warfare to those who simply want to reproduce. The genome begins to reflect it - the members of the species don't want to have sex for the actual purpose of sex - there are various other reasons.

Eventually, the deviation of the species' genome from the purpose of life is so large that the species destroys itself - thus beginning the cycle again.

The selection pressures that are currently affecting humanity are selection for higher religiosity, higher conservatism, lower educational attainment, and lower IQ.

>Why?
Once a species discovers farming, 80% are free to do whatever they want. However, free is subjective and the 80% what their genome tells them to do - gather resources and reproduce. Since 20% will feed the whole 100%, the population will rise and technology will progress. This forces the apex species to fight itself for resources - which leads to better technology - and more population - compounding the problem rather than solving it.

In such an environment, natural selection will not prefer individuals who want to have engage in economic and physical warfare to either reproduce or protect their young - it will prefer who are want to engage in economic and physical warfare for the sake of it - reproduction is simply a derivative.

The landscape keeps changing due to technology, but the game of life has been the same for humans since the discovery of farming. It does not matter if jobs get automated away - unemployed humans are now free to engage in some type of war - economic, political, or physical. If they are not proactive, then some other human in power will find it in their interest to use unemployed human beings to their own benefit. Unemployment never lasts for a prolonged time without the tribe getting wiped out or assimilated.
