Why is there no alternative to calculus? Why aren't there algebraic or other methods to achieve the same things as you do in calculus?

It seems as though math is linear in the sense that there's only one way to do something.

Non-standard analysis offers an intersting alternative to calculus considering infinitesimals as numerical entities greater than zero but smaller than any positive real number (they belong to the so-called hyperreal numbers) as opposed to variables approaching zero. Concepts such as continuity, uniform continuity and derivatives can be rephrased using equalities involving infinitesimals instead of limits. Of course it is just a rephrasing of calculus using more abstract logic than one would be comfortable of, and many difficulties arise but it is still a fascinating theory.

The reason there is 'only one way' is because it was proved using that 'one way', and swapping them out with other things breaks it all.

Integration and derivation are algebraic methods if you define them that way. Like just define the derivative as the unique function d from C^1(R) to R such that
1) d is linear
2) d satisfies the liebniz rule
3) d(id_R)=1
And then you can define integration in the language of differential forms. Ultimately you're going to need some topological or analytic statements to make it work, but that's just the nature of trying to do interesting math on the reals.

No one does this because it's a lot more work and would be pretty inaccessible to the majority of college students.
