Is there anyway to explain people how the universe isn't expanding into something else, but that it is space itself that is expanding?
A lot of people find it hard to imagine this.

What's the relevance of space expanding?

4 Dimensions

chocolate chips on cookie dough. heat the dough in an oven, and the entire thing expands and all the chips get father and farther apart from each other

Imagine every object as a little mark on a balloon. Now as this balloon expands, the distance between each point gets bigger. This balloon is space

>> No.1002326

>>1002312
Mathematically the distance hasn't changed unless there are more points on the balloon.

Blow up a balloon, pinch the end and draw a grid of points on the surface, let the air out and save for later. Next time you need to explain this concept, pull out your handy Expanding Universe Balloon of Science! *trumpet* and blow it up.

I used an example along those lines but they just said "well the balloon is expanding into other space though"

Also, you're adding matter to the universe to expand it.

The 2D surface of a balloon expanding into a 3rd unseen dimension the same way our 3D universe is expanding into a 4th unseen dimension.

ORLY?

get a balloon, stick bits of paper to it

as you inflate the balloon the bits of paper get further away from each other but the balloon itself is doing the expanding.

>> No.1002422

be a definition-whore. 'universe' means everything there is, so there is by definition nothing for it to expand into.

this might work

Many cosmological models require a beginning of some sorts. There's a somewhat simpler answer. There wasn't one. The universe isn't some self contained bubble, it's just an infinite field of perfectly entropic quantum particles. The universe we observe today is the result of a random quantum propagation of matter/anti-matter that annihilated neighboring matter instead of itself causing the most minute of gravitational fluctuations leading to the 0th generation of star, which eventually went nova and is referred to as the Big Bang.

The apparent expansion of the universe is then simply the result of the wavefront of radiation from the first star disrupting other perfectly entropic quantum particles causing the eventual formation of new stars, galaxies, etc.

yes, does anyone know about the origin of the picture OP posted?

What is 'time' expanding into. Does the future have to already exist for time to be able to expand into it? Does it require another dimension, etc?

Basically, no. It's just expanding. Same with space.

>> No.1002493

>>1002452
It's basically just quantum mechanics without all the ridiculously complex stuff to make it conform to a silly balloon universe.

>> No.1002497

>>1002455
The balloon is spacetime, "that which is." The space around the balloon represents "that which is not."

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar", every "supreme leader", every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The SURFACE of the balloon is expanding into a 3rd dimension. Our universe is 3D expanding into a 4th.

Ahhh, no.
