Are holograms dead tech? It's been decades since there's been any forward progress whatsoever with them

Nobody has even the faintest idea how to protect an image into the air like is seen in the film without a medium to contain the image. It's like trying to make an image with just the electron gun of a crt it's not possible without a medium to throw the image onto,

Yeah it really feels like they're just totally clueless on it. It might be impossible, you're basically trying to just make the air a different color

holograms are definitely dead tech. using an analog film to make 3D imagery is as outdated as Polaroid cameras. except for holograms, you need to shoot your polaroid picture in a dark room illuminated by only a monochromatic laser. not a really useful technology.

and keep in mind i am talking about the real holograms that made a splash in physics in the 20th century. not the meme stickers they put on credit cards. two different things, and the things on credit cards aren’t true holography

real “hologram” technology is dead. the analogy is, for example, Plasma TV screens. they had promise to do something at one time but conventional technology managed to supersede all of the advances they might have offered at one time

Maybe use sound waves from multiple directions that collide at some point and heat air in that specific location strong enough to glow/ionize?

Probably impossible, and no reason to work on it because what does it really accomplish that a screen and a video don't accomplish?

I feel like it would be more practical to figure out how to give something like these things "pixels" in a 3D space

Like OP said that was over a decade ago around the time the original Avatar film premiered and the tech was shit and hasn't improved considerably.

They don't. EM waves don't propagate through a medium, they propagate through the vacuum. What's that got to do with the topic?

Pepper's ghost, not a hologram.
