Also Starlink is set to become real profitable real soon. Given that they've surpassed the >1M customer mark. WIth an avg of ~$110/m, thats $1.3B per year in revenue run rate. Possibly, they'll get to 2-3 million by end of next year. Which will set them at ~$4B per year in revenue.

No. Camera only got them so far and you see FSD driving around the city everywhere now with almost 1/3 of a million cars on the road driving it in the US. Its still not perfect yet, but thats more attributable to planning/training of the neural net rather than limitations of the camera itself. Thats not to say cameras dont have limits. They do. But with camera alone, they've solved bulk of the self driving problems so far.

They removed the low resolution radar they had from 2014+ because their old radar wasn't giving them good/accurate enough readings for self driving and camera was better than the radar, as proven by how far they've gotten so far without radar now. HD radar maybe added to augment the cameras to help with hard to see collision avoidances like potholes/snow covered roads but its still not needed for FSD v1. Maybe FSD v2 will use HD radar, maybe FSD v3 will use some other state of the art hardware/software, etc.

Finally, taking so long to reach gas giants is simply unacceptable. Gravity assists should be completely banned.
Instead use the SLS funds to start a fast-transit program to create a working nuclear thermal rocket by the end of this decade. Scientists should be able to send their payloads to jovian region with not more than 1 year of transit time.

Their official launch date is Q4 2023, which is the quietest way of admitting to launching in H1 2024. Their second stage is currently getting ready for test firing and they've got a main engine testing run coming up early next year. They'll probably get to the pad in 2024 if they only hit the usual problems. 2025 would mean they found an issue that merited a significant redesign.

The good news is that Vega is still fucked for the foreseeable future which leaves a big opportunity for more prospective clients to arrive with funding.

Speaking of ranking space entities, what about national space agencies?
I think there are two main groups, the "big 6" (NASA, pockocmoc, ESA, CNSA, JAXA, ISRO) and the rest. In the former, the number one by faaar both historically and in present day is NASA. Number two, after a large gap, would be disputed between Russia, China, and Europe, depending on what metric you value the most (e.g. rocket launchers, human spaceflight, space probes, science, budget and capability, future potential, etc etc). Russia has been pretty much rotting this last decade while China can't stop growing. At current pace, and disregarding private industry and musky's company, I believe they have a chance at becoming number one within the next two decades. Of course, if NASA just stays stagnated and doesn't do much more. Then, after another gap, there's India and Japan.
For the rest of the world I think having an independent access to orbit is the main criterion for ranking them, there aren't that many prominent space agencies/countries that don't have their own launchers anyways. After the big 6, and laarge gap, you'd have, in no particular order, Ukraine, Iran, Israel, South Korea, North Korea, Canada, and UAE.
I wouldn't know where to put European agencies like that of France, Germany or Italy, for they are already part of ESA. I suppose immediately after the big 6 hmmm

Unlikely. There's no unique IP to Virgin beyond a launch system that can't scale up. L1 costs less than Pegasus but it's still expensive when you compare it to other vehicles in the same weight class, and Pegasus' business model has been dead for years. Buying out Virgin would just be adding a lot of debt to get a rocket who's payloads would prefer to fly as a rideshare on Alpha, which is probably going to end up a Northrop product at some point anyway.

>business model has been dead for years
Air launch still has one killer advantage over tradlaunch, which is not needing a launch pad. This market is still untapped because Pegasus is too expensive and VO business development is too immature to properly develop it. NG can successfully sell this capability to launchlet ally states, a valuable niche that justifies a couple $100M acquisition. Lockheed is backing ABL for exactly this reason

>> No.15084779

the funny thing about Launcher One and Pegasus is that the most attractive thing about air launched rockets is the ability to launch a payload to orbit out over the ocean in secret when nobody is watching. Which is kinda hard when you turn your carrier aircraft into a giant billboard that everyone knows about and anyone can track.

Astra and ABL both worked on developing launchers in a box, and some of China's new solid vehicles are deployed from the same road-mobile launchers that their ICBM cousins are flying from. You don't need a plane to have a responsible launch capacity from some backwoods location.

There's also the fact that there aren't any clients with a clearly defined need for this. The military is interested in the idea, but they're "interested" in a lot of shit.

This had yet to be proven with either Pegasus or Launcher One. You could design a responsive system, but the only air-to-orbit rocket that's been built so far that was capable of rapid deployment was the ASM-135 and that doesn't actually get up to orbital velocity.

>inconspicuous
It's kinda hard to have an "inconspicuous" launch when every orbital launch shows up with ICBM launch warning satellites. The only country that tries for stealthy launches is North Korea and every time they launch something it always ends up in your newsfeed within twenty-four hours. Even China publishes NOTAMs for their launches these days, even when they're not talking about them beforehand.

>Shuttle was the work of the devil
I believe it, remember it killed 3 men before it even launched
>During a countdown test for STS-1, a pure nitrogen atmosphere was introduced in the aft engine compartment of Space Shuttle Columbia to reduce the danger of an explosion from the many other potentially dangerous gases on board the orbiter.[36][37] At the conclusion of the test, pad workers were given clearance to return to work on the orbiter, even though the nitrogen had not yet been purged due to a recent procedural change. Three technicians, John Bjornstad, Forrest Cole, and Nick Mullon, entered the compartment without air packs, unaware of the danger since nitrogen gas is odorless and colorless, and lost consciousnesses due to lack of oxygen.[38] Several minutes later, another worker saw them and tried to help, but passed out himself.
>Bjornstad died at the scene; Cole died on April 1 without ever regaining consciousness, and Mullon suffered permanent brain damage and died on April 11, 1995, from complications of his injuries.
