I thought of Musk as a conman because I would compare him to fictional visionaries: heroes like Tony Stark. These people aren't real and Musk doesn't belong in that line up. Instead, Musk can be likened to an artist. A failed artist really. Many great men started out trying to bring their dreams into the world and settled for just doing what they can make of it. Spaceships, the medium Musk dabbles in, may not take us to Mars. They may never even be viable. Those few men striving for self-expression, not succeeding, invokes passion in witnesses. The artist gives his hunger to them so that they find their own vision. That is to say, a great artist will bring his art to a recognizable form and change the world in doing so. Musk, an autist technocrat billionaire, is one breath away from awakening the world.
Musk deserves to be compared to the real men of his stature. The great and the truly terrible. He has chosen not to be a lurking capitalist, hiding in the shadows swaying the world through hard to spot paper trails. Many of the mega rich have followed him into the light of day. Bill Gates, the eccentric pandemic prophet, is one such case. They demand wealth and fame and legacy. Agreeable aristocrats proving bravery before Sauron's all-seeing eye, each tiny blurb on Twitter in defiance of centuries of hidden traditions.
