>Do you want every football team to win?
That's a bad analogy. The purpose of a football game is to determine one winner. The purpose of opening up spaceflight to the corporate world was to get more, better, cheaper spaceships. That really works if there are multiple competitive ships flying, from multiple companies.

I'm sure I am not alone here in hoping that affordable space travel for "just folks" is a thing before I am dead. Best chance of that is for lots of successful rockets.

If your goal is just to hate Bezos, maybe hope that his rockets get better but he gets impacted wisdom teeth or something.

Miles ahead of anyone not named SpaceX, propulsive landing before 2025 is the right choice, better to go for an incrementally larger payload capacity than get stuck New Glenning it for a decade.

They've proven they can get a rocket out to market for less than 100m and that was their first try, it's roughly similar to what SpaceX was providing with the block. Apparently the 8,000 kg payload is perfect for mega constellations, that the average payload to a single plane is under that value which makes sense. Don't get the hate for them, not to mention their satellite building, electron, and photon markets. Much better than any other SPAC.

Not trying to shill anything here but recently I started taking my Catholicism a lot more seriously and I find it refreshing. You get the whole "turn the other cheek" shit which is essentially "I leave you alone you leave me alone", but you are also called to be disgusted at Communism and BLM shit. That's where I stand right now, I guess.
>inb4 you are gay
>inb4 the Pope is pozzed
>inb4 I worship Jews
I understand all the rebuttals. Catholicism has its own quirks and I just find the historical and spiritual aspect fascinating. Georges Lemaître with the Big Bang, Nicolas Steno one of the fathers of geology, etc. Good framework for a Martian subcolony. Catholic morals would lead to a very healthy startup civilization even if you were an athiest among them

How old are you? I had an edgy liberal atheist phase in high school, in the run up to the 2015ish primary, and I voted for Sanders. As a new graduate white male today it's all out war against us and the notion of "whiteness" right now, soon you will realize that modern day liberals are inseparable from anti-white racism. Anything that has historically been associated with white people is now fair game for revisionism and the erasure of our history. The world has changed dramatically in 10 years.

>“As we performed mitigation and sandblasting work, we discovered significant corrosion in the primary structure including rust that penetrated through 3-inch steel plates” lead engineer Scott Henderson said. Corrosion was expected - the stand has been out in the weather since the 1960 - but holes in 3-inch steel were not.
>“Essentially, that’s where the 400 tons of steel we’re adding (to the stand) come into play,” Henderson said. “That’s not all replacing of rusted steel, but a significant part is. Some of that structural steel is unique to project to provide the stiffness necessary to very accurately measure engine thrust.… “
>The restoration means no engine testing before September 2021, but Blue Origin engine tests will happen at 4670.

Now that Shelby is on his last Term ULA should push for an ISS replacement that has features such as fuel depot modules, that way companies like Electron lab could top up which opens the door to the Moon & mars with smaller rockets.

Fuel depots are money printing Machines. A smart move would be to have ULA offer the technology free to American companies.

That way they can kick off the competition and say during their earnings reports share holder's meetings that next year they're offering bigger Big-Gulps than their competition which pumps up their share prices as it creates hype..

If they keep their technology to themselves then it's more difficult to generate hype to pump up their stock price.

>Hydrogen is used for chilling the engine before start since T-5h40m hydrogen is circulated between the ET and the engines to chill down the hydrogen system and this stops at T-9.5s while engine start sequence is at T-6.6s. http://i.stack.imgur.com/MhCQP.png The startup sequence hydrogen valve is the MFV while oxygen is the MOV and you can see how much slower and more gradual flow increase is on the RS25

>The RS25 on the shuttle is more resistant to that and the amount of hydrogen is minimal but DeltaIV uses a RS-68 that is in many ways derived off the RS25 engine and the ignition sequence there is very very fuel rich and valves open few seconds before LOX is being pumped to avoid melting the engine with oxygen rich combustion. http://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/assets/images/spacecraft/2014/20141121_2011-vb-cropped.jpg

>That is a tradeoff for cost reductions in the RS68 engine and you can see especially during Delta Heavy launches that rocket is setting itself on fire because of hydrogen cloud that combusts during engine start.

reminds me of the other day I had a thought about how I wish in the late80s/early 90s NASA has decided to give the Shuttle-C a try (big ass cargo fairing replaces the shuttle, a pod of three used shuttle engines under it, orange tank and SRBs the same, no modifications needed to the launch pad, etc). I was even thinking, since it was not man-rated and no lives were at risk, for their first shot (instead of wasting it to just hefting boilerplate) they could have launched a great big tank of water into orbit, and with a couple of solar panels on it and a small electrolysis setup feeding a couple of small tanks with O2, and a docking adaptor on the nose, maybe a couple of cases of MRE then suddenly the whole "They are stranded in orbit, will we be able to launch a rescue ship in time, maybe the Russians can save them!?" trope is no more.
I'm starting to think manned-space without the permanent presence of an orbiting water/O2/food emergency re-supply shelter was reckless.

The American dominance has only been a thing since the 50s too. Moreover, the industrial "technological" American has only been a thing since the 60s due to our invention of computer chips. Before that, most of our industry was in the agriculture.

People have a tendency to hold on to things and believe them to be static. This isn't an American phenomena, its a universal human phenomena. Its how our language works, how our thoughts form naturally, and how we imagine things to be. Its an unfortunate flaw in humans.

What I could see is a more moderate version of that fascist Alt-Reality of Star Trek. Instead of it being a universal democracy your voting power would be based on what do you get done in the colony.

I'm a proponent for the idea of rejecting surface structures the long term and going all in with modular nuclear reactors & tunnel boring equipment. The idea is that you would build tunnels, and within in the side of the tunnels you would have an apartment built to your specifications before you depart.

Under this Space-Fascist society you gain points the more apartments you build. Somebody who busts their knuckles laying down infrastructure isn't going to take shit from Karen the paper pusher. >propulsive landing before 2025
You drank too much of the investor kool-aid. Do you actually believe they're going to build a brand new engine and rocket in just three or four years out of a material they have no experience with, at a scale much greater than anything they've done, and then propulsively land it at a rate that would make it cheaper than the Falcon 9 per launch? They're not even doing reusability the right way, they're using kerosene instead of methane. They also may not use a steel booster.
>Apparently the 8,000 kg payload is perfect for mega constellations
There is a reason why BO is building New Glenn instead of a medium lift. Rockets don't have to carry a full payload, they need to beat Falcon 9 and Starship on at least cost per launch if they want to survive and get enough money to build a heavy lift rocket. ISS resupply is an old space tier dead end. Eventually they'll be competing on cost of kg to orbit as space tugs enable rideshare to any orbit.
>Don't get the hate for them, not to mention their satellite building, electron, and photon markets.
The Electron business is worth maybe 40 million a year and it isn't profitable, they lost more money last year on it than they brought in total. Nearly every space SPAC builds their own satellites or owns a company that does. There are plenty of companies that will build you a satellite and get it launched for you, if Rocket Lab is more expensive the vertical integration isn't worth shit.

http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-050410a.html

At Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, the deconstruction of NASA's first Mission Control building, the Mercury Control Center (MCC) began April 28, 2010.

The original structure, erected between 1956 and 1958, was last modified in 1963. According to NASA, the MCC succumbed "to the two worst enemies of structures along the space coast — time and salt air — necessitating that it be demolished as a safety measure."

Although listed on the National Register of Historic Places, repairs to the 50 year old building were estimated in 2006 to be too costly for the space agency. To just replace its crumbling, asbestos-laden ceiling would have cost $1 million; to return the Control Center to its original state would have needed $5 million. The decision was therefore made to have it demolished and move its consoles and equipment to a nearby museum display (see photographs below).

The facility served as the mission control for all Project Mercury missions — the United States' first manned space program, including the flights of first American astronaut Alan Shepard and first-in-orbit John Glenn — as well as the first three flights of the Gemini Program. From 1961 through 1963, the center, which layout was developed by flight director Eugene Kranz and first led by Chris Kraft, housed the flight controllers whose duty it was to monitor and support the missions after liftoff and follow them through until splashdown. Additionally, the MCC supported vehicle checkout, spacecraft tracking and astronaut training.

With the launch of Gemini IV in 1965, Mission Control moved to where it remains to this day, Houston, Texas, leaving the original facility to serve for launch control and as a tracking station until the Launch Control Center (LCC) at Kennedy Space Center replaced it during the Apollo lunar landing program.

It was built by JAXA's predecessor, NASDA, but owned by NASA, who obtained ownership of the CAM by trading in a free launch of the Japanese Experiment Module Kibo to the Station.[1] The CAM flight model along with the engineering model of the centrifuge rotor were manufactured. The CAM would have been attached to the zenith port on the Harmony module of the ISS. It was cancelled in 2005[2] alongside the Habitation Module and the Crew Return Vehicle, because of ISS cost overruns and scheduling problems in Shuttle assembly flights.

It is now on display in an outdoor exhibit at the Tsukuba Space Center in Japan.[3][4]

Of course. Sorry I’m still not sure on how the colonization timeline goes for SpaceX. Pessimistic assumption: Let’s say the first crew lands on mars in 2029, but they return home. When do colonists start showing up? I don’t think SpaceX will send permanent settlers until at least four or five “sorties”, so I’m guessing we’ll see a permanent crew of a dozen land in 2039 after four or five base-building missions. How the colony grows after that is anyone’s guess.

1 child policy fucked them harder than they realised and obviously caused birth rates to drop to 1 or less, but now that they have gotten rid of it the people aren’t having children, in fact the birth rate collapsed even further after removing it and they had their lowest amount of births in 2020 since records began.

Also they kept killing girls which means they have 30 million men who will never get a woman and the cost of living and especially raising a child have skyrocketed which means that even if they want children they can’t support them. And the culture of the one child policy also contributes to this.

Their population will go into decline this decade and because they have so many old people the cost of supporting them and their pensions will be insane due to the ever decreasing amount of young people.

I like Rocket Lab short term if the rest of the market stops shitting itself but I also have a lot of exposure to the other space stocks and I think it has less meme value than other overvalued stocks like SPCE with a questionable future but have more catalysts supporting their price. What does Rocket Lab have after the hype of a 'new' SpaceX competitor wears off? A small launcher business that will soon be in terminal decline and four to six long years before a Neutron launch.

I do wonder if it's possible for them to stop going down this path and try to raise money for a Starship competitor. If they could get enough money to start they could probably get the rest during development if it looks promising. Why they haven't tried that, I don't know, maybe Beck has one foot out the door and will take the easy money selling his shares over the next few years. Even with a Starship competitor it's hard to compete, SpaceX will have all their Starlink launches going to space anyway that are a platform for rideshare and they'll have the Starlink profit as well. Longer term they'll have all the traffic going to Mars, it will be hard to compete when SpaceX has the much better economies of scale

In a world without Starship, it makes sense that we’d have a reusable Ferry to LEO for crew, a reusable LEO to Lunar Orbit ferry, and then a reusable Lunar Orbit to Phobos ferry, which then can return to Lunar orbit for refueling. Around Phobos, you’d board an ascent descent vehicle which lands on the martian surface and refuels before returning to Phobos.

If we lived in a post-scarcity society would it matter to you if humans had a population of 200 million or 200 trillion? Beyond the biological imperatives driving growth, what you get out of having more people is greater technology from having more bright minds creating it but development will reach a point where technological progress stops unless we greatly alter our intelligence and become something other than human.

I just don't see the point of trying to colonize everywhere in the galaxy with humans and the fact that no other alien species has done that seems to imply either that they're incapable of doing it, they don't exist, or aliens end up deliberately limiting their population growth which is what I think will happen with humans.

Price only goes up if supply has difficulty meeting demand or acquiring the resource becomes more difficult (and thus more costly) for some reason or another. Demand for cars sure went up between 1900 and 1920 but they got more affordable too.

To stop work and drive 15 minutes away every time they are even doing a pressure test is a massive slow down

Every vehicle has to be tested several times remember

>Price only goes up if supply has difficulty meeting demand
Which is almost always the case outside of science fiction, great demand cannot be immediately filled. Usually the supply increases enough to meet demand and the price drops off, that would be very different than what would happen if we decided to make as many humans as possible because there would be exponential demand growth that would need some technology that may not even be possible to provide enough supply as fast as the humans are being produced. Even then there can be local supply scarcity and you would have to pay more money for something if it is shipped across the galaxy rather than produced locally.

We her type did cause the Challenger accident because some administrators lost sight of the purpose of the Shuttle program by puting other people's jobs at a higher priority than lives & billions of dollars worth of equipment.

See this photo? They're images from DoD spy stuff. The photos were taken after a NASA employee went around a female Admin's approval. She flat out rejected the DoD's offering many times. Once she learned of what her employees did she launched an investigation over people subverting her authority.

She's like that Cop who tried to throw a fire fighter into jail when he was trying to do CPR on a woman and couldn't move his truck, but the cop wanted it moved out of the way.

My question was poorly phrased, so there isn't any orbit where it would cost more money to get your satellite there using a tug than it would be to get a dedicated small lift launch? Some rare orbit that would require a lot of deltaV from a normal rideshare insertion point?

More specifically a satellite on a tug launched from Starship compared with whatever small launcher, say the Electron. The Vigoride can do 2 KM/S for around 5 million, if more deltaV is needed than that I don't think it could be competitive. Basically I want to know the edge cases for small lift rockets in the future, outside of being able to launch as immediately as possible.

The main advantage of O'Neill cylinders is you can have all the advantages of living in gravity, without having to claw your way out of a gravity well every time you want to leave. They seem stupid at first when all your steel industry is Earthside, but once you've got a lot of mining and industry going on in the asteroid belt it makes sense to just build habitats out near where the building resources are. Transit between distant cylinders would be quite cheap because of the low delta v needed.

I just don't know, a 30 degree plane change looks like it would take about 3.6 km/s deltaV, that would be a bit extreme as most of SpaceX insertion orbits seem to be around 53 degrees, polar, SSO, with probably the odd low inclination launch of around 28 degrees. Still, a change like that would require a larger tug that would cost more than an Electron launch, at least until tug costs come down more so it's possible they can't completely replace the small-lift vehicle market.

Humans are my species, and therefore it is rational to value us the most.

20 is too low. You need at least 38 to compete with Starship, because otherwise you cam just send a pair of Starships directly to Mars. Cutting out about 20 SS+SH tanker flights for refueling three Mars starships starts making the case for a dedicated freighter... and even then it requires Martian infrastructure in orbit to receive the cargo.

Alternatively you need some ridiculous meme tier drive that can get you there outside Hohmann transfer windows.
