Now, It's about being the best CS fag

Because even a beginner who doesn't understand anything about the computer's inner workings could program.

But the code monkey ends up getting a higher salary most of the time. Hopefully it will change when every STEM study will have as much advanced cs classes as advanced math classes

I give it 5 years before cs graduates entry salaries and job opportunities start going to complete shit, companies are now starting to realize that for 99% of jobs a cs degree and a 3 week ""coding bootcamp""" are of almost equal value. in european countries with multi-tiered higher education systems there are basically trade school degrees for programming and the salaries are much lower. many companies have recently started to drop the strict cs bachelor requirement for development jobs

it won't if you learn more cs stuff. Don't worry about it, it's normal in the times we live.

>That goes for anything if you mean actual CS

Technically yes but the effort needed to self study CS is trivial compared to any other decent STEM field because the CS requirements are a joke, the only math you need is Calc 2 and basically no physics knowledge. Compare that to Engineering or Physics where you need to be at least proficient in Calc III, DE, Linear Algebra, Physics, etc...

Then you have the labs, you can never have enough lab experiences, compare that to CS you can do literally any project in your home since these involve just coding even if you're doing something like Compilers or OS.

Literally any Math, Physics and Engineering major can learn CS in a month.

I studied mechanical engineering for a year, I can tell you this is far ftom true

Listen, I also hate cs students but the field is very respectable, don't get influenced by the memes you hear in a vietnamese doll making forum.

There's a difference between freshman CS at your local uni and good CS programs. There's then a further difference between good CS programs and CS as a field. Take any advanced algorithms class in the graduate level and you'll see. I'm an EE/Physics grad, but looking at matching with forest partial order and convolutions algorithms makes my head hurt.

>There's a difference between freshman CS at your local uni and good CS programs.

What do you learn in a good CS program? Theory of Computation? Design and Analysis of Algorithms? Compiler Design? cause that's what I'm seeing in schools like MIT/Stanford/Berkeley/CMU and all of these are an absolute joke in comparison to even the shittiest Signals or Fluids course.

I agree with graduate school at least but my point was that majoring in undergrad CS is a meme.

bioinformatics grad programs usually take people who majored in either bio or CS so if you've done a lot of one and a bit of the other you'll be pretty well set up to get into one.

>> No.9991568

>>9986135
Yes, and you usually have to write, but that doesn't make you a writer.
Biofags, engayneers and such know things from their field AND how to code, code monkeys know only how to code and nothing more than that

>> No.9991625

>>9991189
>an absolute joke in comparison to even the shittiest signals or fluids course

Signals was mostly table lookups on Fourier transforms. The research in that field and the representation might be profoundly difficult (particularly where it intersects with information theory), but undergrad signals isn't hard. Fluids? I audited that with some of my mechE friends, and it was mostly applied differentials and physics. Not easy, but not super hard.

I do think some classes that are considered introductory in CS are a joke, but design and analysis of algorithms, compiler theory, analytical combinatorics, graphics, etc. are legitimately no joke. I think pairing hard CS classes and double majoring in another hard science/math is definitely a lot of work, difficult, and a very respectable stem education, especially since taking the right math and CS courses at the right school gives you the tools to think your way out of most academic situations. I think the problem is that CS is wildly inconsistent across schools.

>> No.9991629

>>9991568
I don't know where this meme that CS people learn only to code came from. I guess it comes from people looking at the meme CS programs at their meme schools. CS majors at my school have to take calc 3, linalg, intro to proofs, and probability theory (discrete and continuous) just for admission to the major, which isn't to mention the math they have to take for the upper level classes. Most good CS students I know are good at solving problems as their first and foremost skill.

What even is calc 3? Everyone does not live in murica.
Any decent CS programme will teach: Multivariable calc, mathematical logic, automata theory, scientfic computing, machine learning, computer architecture, operating systems, algorithms and data structures... and some others.
Meanwhile selftaught people are profficient in some language and know enough data strucutures to do well in a coding interview. They both might compete for the same job but one has a different perspective.

Was talking about my master's. I'm not really up for a grad purely in bioinformatics but I'd like to make my grad look alot similar to the bioinformatics one so I was wondering if that would enable me to work as a bioinformaticsfag if my degree doesn't strictly say I am one.

This 100%. Plus, the only thing this really shows is that anyone can and most likely will do CS so theres really no need to have an entire degree revolving it. CSfags can literally be replaced by students of other degrees who merely attend a couple courses in comp sci.
