Hey /sci/, I need some advice. I completed my biology degree majoring in Ecology and Biodiversity a few years ago. I'm currently completing free courses from Harvardx in R programming. Did I fuck up by majoring in a shit tier subject? What's the next step to get a career in science? Post-graduate study?

Dont you dare talk trash about ecology and biodiversity. The market values trash over life.
Yeah, learn R if you are a cuck. More importantly take the initiative to specialize yourself and go get some grant money, what do you do with biodiversity, surely you have more to prove yourself than just a degree? What do you read about? Are you good at stats? How are you as a systematist?
Put everything you got into doing good at grad school, it sounds like you are way behind if you already have a degree and aren't researching yet.

The only way to make money with trees is to cut a down a lot of them and then sell it so I hope in your ecology classes you had an environment devastation module and a couple of business classes in your program. Otherwise, you got a meme degree.

Also, all the trees that I've worked with in the past did not have R support so I don't know why you are learning that. Everyone knows you can only program trees with C++.

Why would you take another meme degree? Do you actually enjoy suffering? Do you really want to just dig yourself in the deepest hole possible and then just hang yourself? What the fuck? Get a real fucking STEM degree and stop being a cuck.

Well, if you can actually prove that then you are right and you should do that. However, I imagined that by now in agriculture the planting and harvesting was done completely by those giant robots and the only intellectual field in agriculture was playing God with Monsanto. Maybe I'm wrong but what will you actually do? Like, what is a middle-class agriculture job in 2018?

Well, I am a firm believer that we as humans always have the freedom to take out all the money we have in our bank accounts, then go to the bank and get the biggest possible loan we can get, and then just fuck off to Mexico or Thailand to die in an endless cycle of cocaine and child sex slaves, like God intended.

Idk learn botany and soil science and start modelling ecotones or something.
I hate to see someone get a degree in something so epic only to let the opportunity go to waste. Take some initiative.

Cringe. Stop denying reality. Listen to me, do you actually care about the environment? Do you REALLY care about it? Okay, here is your plan: Just a get a business type degree and focus your entire life on being an investor and businessman. Do this until you are a billionaire and then start the "Autistic Hippie Anon Foundation" to funnel your billions into saving the planet.

Oh, what? Too much work? Can't do that? Then you actually don't give a shit about the environment, you just wanted a reason to pretend like you are better than other people when in reality you are one of the worst types of humans that we still haven't completely nuked from reality.

Mate, you're right that ecology's not actually a trash subject. A lot of money will be put into preservation of the environment when it begins to become truly fucked huh ... then you have faggots like this talking shit who offer no solutions to the current/upcoming problems

Oh, so you would not sacrifice yourself to actually help the environment? Then you don't actually care. You care less about the environment that I've cared about some girlfriends for fuck's sake. Like even I sometimes do a little sacrifice for girls, but you won't even do that.

You are a meme. Absolute meme. Have fun using that moral currency when your youth is behind you and you no longer have the energy to have dreams while also lacking the economic stability that can carry you through the latter half of your life.

It's funny because every time I see one of you faggots I tell them the same:

Use all of your youth for economic gain. Become an investor. Start a business. Etc. Then when you are older use all the money you made to start a trust or fund that can perpetually finance environmental programs.

But no, every single time they ignore it just like you because when they are actually faced with something would ACTUALLY contribute to saving the planet, but would take a little bit of effort, that's when they start crying. Because all you really want to do is smoke weed and shitpost about how much you fucking love trees. You don't care about the environment, you care about how good you look.

If that is true what is the point of your autism. What is the point of everything you said here? Why don't you just go talk with the people working in your foundation saving the trees? Go take pictures with them. Go take a couple of them and go out for whores, but pay for the really good ones. Do whatever you want. Why are you even here crying about trees?

Meme. I am all for renewables as long as they are actually as reliable or better than fossil fuels. I want to see a massive global market of people buying and selling stocks on the various solar farms in the world. Until I see that, renewable energy is a DEAD MEME.

>tfw he does not realize the main source of the problem is the economic system.
Oh, you mean the economic system that has generated the most prosperity and also the widest middle class in human history? Oh, so that's the problem? That's good, just give me an airport and a date and I'll pay for your one way trip to Venezuela so that you can finally live the high life you deserve.

>the system which caused it, covered it up, and exacerbated it
The system that discovered and optimized the methods by which Earth's resources can be turned into useful products and tools like computers, refrigerators, etc., will be the same system that will fix whatever problems this causes. Because that's the nature of capitalism. Capitalism identifies a problem and solves it only by giving the incentive of wealth to creative young people.

>wants to "Fix" the environment by shitty neoliberal economics which doesn't work at all as it requires infinite growth which requires infinite exploitation of the biosphere of the planet.
It doesn't require infinite growth. Daily reminder that if you just save enough money you can just give that to a financial institution that will, through investments, generate a profit and use only that profit to fund the cause you lay out. You can even be dead and this process will continue. Many dead people have, to this day, their funds working for them. So it really is eternal.

I am sorry that you were too dumb to succeed in capitalism. It's okay, humanity always needs workers. I need someone that cleans the toilet I shit on. And believe me, even in communism or any other economic system you like, you would also be at the bottom cleaning the toilets. You should be happy that at least in my system you get to have a smartphone, a reliable supply of food, internet, an apartment, etc.

OK lads, now is about the time I'm searching for an undergraduate course to apply for. I'm interested in science, applied science, environmental science, ecology and the likes. What should I look for in a good degree, and a good university? I've heard that it doesn't particularly matter which university to choose for an undergrad so long as I intend to do postgrad at a different uni, but I can't really believe that. What factors should I take into account at this stage if I want to work in a related field in the future? I'm in Australia.

I'm a postdoc at a major US university with a specialization in quantitative ecology. My work primarily focuses on invasive species that affect agricultural crops. Keep that in mind as my response will be a bit biased but pretty accurate concerning this field (at least in the US):

OP, I don't think you fucked up. As other anons have mentioned, ecology can lean strongly towards quantitative techniques/methods. Learning R is a great idea as it is the standard programming language for ecologists. Of course you'll find folks who still prefer statistical programs like SAS, but that is being phased out. The next step to get a career is for you to think long and hard about what YOU want for a career. Additional study and degrees essentially relegates you to increasingly office-bound positions as you will become over-qualified for positions like field technician.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
