It's like so in almost any engineering course. Many don't change their mentality and still think they're in high school: some drown at the first semester, others can barely swim through the years, just learning the bare minimum in order to pass the exam, panicking when something goes off track.

This is the people who's supposed to become the expert in the field, this worries me.

Depends on who's teaching and what the highschool-college pipeline is like for that school.

At my school, the high school AP classes in the local area taught differentiation and basic integration at the highest. Once those kids got into Calc 2 and hit series and sequences, it was the first time they experienced new math concepts at a college level pace and it washed a lot of them out.

Okay, first of all, Calculus II is undergrad. As in, most people taking it are taking it their freshman year, and shouldn't have anything too heavy going on in your life. If you're a nontraditional student and actually have dependents then that's tough shit dude, I feel for you. But if you're a 20-something or less just going through uni then unfortunately it's expected for somebody in your position that wants to go into STEM to not work and just live off scholarships, loans, and studying.

That isn't to say TIME is always an issue; effective and EFFICIENT studying is the cornerstone of being a student. So, you should have time every now and then to commit to family matters. but having to commit to a work schedule on top of mechanical physics, integral calculus, and whatever extra science or engineering class is on your workload? It's do-able, but not efficient.

Who the fuck is paying for these failures, OP?

No you are not going to succeed in the nuclear engineering field at all. Not because you may lack the ability to actually pass your Calc2 class, but because you didn't pass the class the 1st time around. You don't even take a class unless you've spoken to and purchased all the materials of a student who has already passed the class before you and you've had time to go over everything with a fine tooth comb to make sure you have already learned it. What you are doing is feeding the tuition mill and nothing more.

Treat your studies like they are your god damn job, because no one wants a fucking failure who has a nuclear engineering degree.

Passing Calc II is all about doing homework and doing practice tests.

You should sit down and figure out a roadmap to get yourself financially secure enough to work less than full-time while you are taking classes. I did military to pay for my school. It will probably take you a few years to get there but you will actually be in a position to do well in school

As far as the family stuff. If it's family emergencies then that's just bad luck. If it's long term drama for drama then it's legitimate to ask yourself how much exposure you want to that. You need to take care of yourself before you can even hope to handle other people's problems.

Best of luck.

I found a job with not much difficulty. Nobody ever asked me about my grades in any interview (although people do take note if you have good grades) but they always ask you if you had any practical experience. If I could go back in time the only thing I would change is I would work as a regular electrician during summer instead of fucking around. That way you can learn a lot of stuff without having the responsibility of someone in charge.

Honestly the best advice I can give you is don't be smug, especially towards your workers. There are a lot of regular workers who have been working for +30 plus years and can predict problems better than any college educated person that made the projects. Listen to them and take their advice, learn from them and you'll adapt to the situation relatively quickly. Don't act like you know it all (it really shows if you don't know what you're doing) or that you're special because you have a degree because people will intentionally sabotage you.
