I've used dimensional analysis to derive the cubic formula.
It helps rule out which combinations of coefficients can be added together.

If you look at the quadratic/cubic/quartic formulas, you will find that the coefficients respect the rules of dimensional analysis.

As an example:
Let x^2 + ax + b = 0 [length^2]
x has units of length, a has units of length, b has units of length^2
a/2 has units of length.
a^2 - 4b has units of length^2
sqrt(a^2 - 4b)/2 has units of length.

The rules of algebra pretty much force the dimensional analysis to work the way it does.
