It’s just about social standing. Research might matter but the thing is it applies to business majors and liberal arts as well. It’s the new aristocracy. The subject matter or quality of the classes matters zero. Only the name and who you know. If you work harder or pay more or get lucky or are born into it then you’ll get more of it.

I graduated from Penn, right in the middle of your picture. As an undergraduate, it was terrible. Every benefit you need from an Ivy League in terms of connections is there, but the professors, staff, and faculty all treat the undergraduates like shit and all the undergraduate facilities are shit. I get that I should appreciate how impressive the school is more, and I realize they do an incredible amount of research, but the quality of life alone for undergraduates there was terrible.

Anyway, Penn was my school. Class of 2017.

Undergrad institution literally does not matter. I went to a barely top 100 public university undergrad and I'm at a top 5 program in my field for a PhD. Lets be 100% honest, no one gives a flying fuck what people research undergrad. The other comments saying prestigious programs give you access to better profs/research, sure thats true but no one cares. Admissions boards care that you found a research opportunity at your school, understood your work and stuck with it, not that your PI won a Nobel or a Field's medal.

For graduate school, the prestige of the program is tied to quality of the research, as well as the funding available. The name on the paper absolutely matters as well as the prestige of your PI.

The ones who went to the US also did the GRE, and as far as I know they did pretty well. Quite a few of these guys also had non-academic achievements, but I don't think that factored in much.

Maybe his experiences have been different, it could be he or someone he knows has been rejected from several places despite seemingly ticking the boxes.

It does happen. I don't think physics is hypercompetitive, but to get a PhD studentship you usually need to convince someone that you have the interest and capacity to do the work they need you to do, and that isn't necessarily achieved by just having decent grades.

I'm a math PhD student at a good school (not absolutely top-tier, but good, especially in my field) and I can say this is a pretty accurate picture of almost all the students here as well.
3.5+ GPA, 1-2 years of either a bachelor's thesis or a toy project under the supervision of a prof is a normal and perfectly sufficient application. Nobody even cares enough about GRE scores to mention them, they're basically a bureaucratic formality.
Obviously there is some variation around this (some people have more experience like REUs in undergrad and stuff like that, some people have very minimal research experience or a slightly lower GPA, some people got a nonzero score on the Putnam once or twice, etc.) but people meme up the quality of your average grad school applicant a LOT.

>Everyone I've met dislikes it

What? I am physics undergrad there. Literally I know one single person who doesn't like it there, but she's a total fucking idiot.

IMO its the perfect place:

-It's fucking cold and snowy all the time
-It's pretty rural. The campus is well incorporated into the landscape which makes for a really beautiful setting
-Physics and math are very rigorous and challenging, actually useful material
-Beautiful architecture (IGNORING North Campus. Seriously... what the fuck)

These are all personal things, obviously, but that's why people go different places to begin with. Don't come here if you don't like the cold. Don't come here if you want easy classes where you can just dick off in your dorm instead of going to lecture. Don't come here if you aren't passionate about something. Don't come here if you're a stupid city fuck who doesn't know how to survive when you aren't <10 m from a club, supermarket, laundromat, and whatever-the-fuck-else all at once.

There's nothing wrong with hating the cold, hating needing to do work to do well in your classes (...eh), hating being in a rural environment, etc. But it's not the University's fault that you chose to go there despite those things. It doesn't make it a bad place because many people can't handle the environment.

>>9914701

The people are mean? What? It doesn't even make sense for a university's entire student body to be "mean". Does this seriously need to be explained? Everywhere has mean people. Everywhere has nice people.

Math here is fantastic. We've got great professors here. If you're heavy into research we've got the Illinois Geometry Lab which is the undergrad gateway into math research. The grads work in conjunction with the professors to lead the research team. They also do a lot of outreach if you're into that.
We're losing one of our professors here but she got a position I believe for Purdue--the classes she taught were all on finance mainly for actuaries.
There's also Matrix which helps connect undergrads with faculty. They do some pretty interesting stuff but from the few meetings I've gone there it seemed to be a bit too laid back for my taste. There's also a few math crossover RSO's on campus. Too many to name though. I know one of them does math and genetics.
As for our department building, it's pretty to look at from the outside. But the inside doesn't do it justice. It's old. They're trying to get funds to make it feel more modern while preserving the structure. The basement is pretty comfy. They've got big rooms meant for studying there with big tables. If it makes a difference, I haven't seen a whiteboard in there. But if you prefer one I recommend going to Siebel.
Other than that, from what I've been told about math grad life, it's basically you take the classes that interest you while working on whatever your thesis is. There's breathing room for stuff outside your field. If you really wanna get into the applied side of things talk to Professor Richard Sowers. And in the case that I'm lying, and she does not leave the university, Professor Jing Wang knows a lot of actuary/financial stuff so talk to her if that interests you.
All I can really offer you is what I see from an undergrad perspective and can speak from second hand about the grad perspective. Hope it helps.
As for weather, yeah it kinda does get rough I think. The cold bites sometimes. Just bundle up and you should be fine. I knew a guy from Hawaii who just had a scarf and a jacket going out.

And as for life at U of I, it's quaint. That's really the best way to describe it. You've got bars where people just like to go to party on the main street near campus. And then you've got metro area bars that are more suited for just drinking and chilling. There's a Binny's nearby and an Aldi's, Wal-Mart, Meijer so you're pretty much set for groceries. If you really feel lazy, you can pay the premium for County Market which is really close to campus.
We've got a farmer's market in Urbana near one of the malls with niche shops. If you play Magic, D&D or any tabletop there's Gopher Gaming at that mall for that kind of stuff.
As for road trips you have Chicago, Indianapolis, and Wisconsin nearby to name a few. So even though you're in the middle of corn you have easy access to urban areas if you really need it.
As for campus activities it's got a lot of life. There's an RSO/club for whatever you can think of. You get movies each month shown at our main Union building. We got T-Pain to perform here last semester. Krannert center attracts a lot of the finer arts if you're into that. There's an arboretum South East which is super comfy if you like that stuff. If you don't have a car then public transportation system isn't too bad to navigate. Just takes a bit of getting used to.
It's a big school so you're bound to meet people outside your department pretty frequently. It keeps things interesting. Hope you enjoy it if you do indeed end up coming here for graduate school.
As an aside, you do end up saving more usually if you buy a house here and live in it for 4 years as opposed to renting for 4 years.

I highly doubt that. I'm not in the designated STEM campus.
Here's a challenge, though:
Next year I'll be at least the runner up in some sport at JIUDESC (I'm pretty confident I'll be the champion, but let's keep at that just to be sure). If you manage to contact me after the event, I'll give you 100 banana bucks. Let me know if you accept the challenge or not.

Nottingham uni

I regret not going to a more prestigious uni so much, although I really like the experience here. Grew up in a shithole with abusive single mum so had no confidence and it was the most prestigious place I applied to. In the end I got A*A*A* which was easily top at my school (expected this at application time).

Going to apply to "mast physics" (4th year of natural sciences physics for external students) at Cambridge next year after I finish my 3 year bsc.

Right now I'm in (((journalism))) but I am seriously considering biology as an escape from the poz. You could definitely manage socially without joining a frat tho, I'm entering my junior year and don't even know anyone who's IN a frat.
