There's also the issue that if this person is giving false information in referrals she's liable for defamation. That's why references typically are either "yes I would hire this person" or "no I would not hire this person."

Bring a formal complaint to the school, as well. Your graduate committee should be able to confirm it was your work, and revocation of professorship will make all her bad references look a little shady.

Also you don't have to pay the lawyer up front if you can't afford it. He can go on a payment plan until he wins the case, and once he wins the case and gets an absolute fuck load of money from doing so he can pay the remainder off immediately.

Almost all lawyers representing plaintiffs work for a percentage of final recovery. This is always spelled out in a fee agreement signed in the process of a client hiring an attorney.

Attorneys for defendants generally bill directly, but OP would be a plaintiff in this case.
