quick FAQ about fairings & Steve

>what's the deal with Mr Steven?
Mr Steven is a 60 meter long, highly maneuverable boat. It is currently being leased by SpaceX.
>why does it have a gigantic net?
To catch fairings, after they separate from the Falcon 9 2nd stage
>why catch them, and not just let them hit the ocean?
The seawater wrecks the fancy composite fairing, so a method of keeping them from touching the water is needed
>why recover them anyways?
The fairings cost three million dollars each. Together, they make up 10% of the cost of an entire Falcon 9. To reuse them would mean big cash savings for each launch; plus, SpaceX wants to avoid being cadence-limited by their autoclave, which can only produce a certain number of fairings per month.
>is this launch the first time Mr Steven is being used?
No, but it is the first time that Mr Steven's new, 4x larger net is going to be tested. So far, no fairings have been caught by Mr Steven—but some got really close (thus the new larger net area)
>will there be a stream of Mr Steven for this launch?
Maybe, but it might be too dark to see anything.
>does Mr Steven move to catch the fairings, or do the fairings move to 'hit' the boat?
A bit of both. The fairings have steerable parafoils, and Mr Steven has powerful omnidirectional thrusters

Depends on the separation of the fairings and how much steering control they have in space and in the atmosphere. Catching both halves will require some fairly aggressive maneuvering immediately after separation to keep them from going too far apart.

There's also the potential of a midair collision taking out one or both of the fairing's parafoils, and thus the fairing itself.

well the big thing about these newest launches is that the Falcon 9 Block 5 first stage should be pretty much immediately reusable after landing, shipping to the pad and refueling. They said they only need to do real maintenance after ten flights, which would be completely revolutionary. Not that they really need to relaunch in a day, but in theory that should be possible now. Plus: if all these launches this year go as planned it‘ll get human rated from what I understood so it‘ll be able to send crew capsules into space.
On top of that, you can strap any of these first stages onto a Falcon Heavy core as a side booster to get a much stronger rocket.
If this all works as planned, space just got even cheaper and not just for machines, but for humans as well.
It‘s a pretty exciting machine they have there.

But most people in here right now just want to see two pieces dropped from orbit getting caught by a ship with a humongous base ball glove.

It says they saw the fairing from the ship, but couldn't get there in time because of bad weather.

We just have to face reality that even the block 5 just can't catch a fairing. Without any control rockets the fairing is just too erratic of a landing site because of the atmosphere.

They will never consistently catch the fairing.

>> No.9892061

>>9892053
where'd you get that idea from? They've gotten to within a few hundred meters of Mr Steven. Their control and landing prediction software will only get better; I'd imagine a tweak of the glide ratio and Steven placement will do the trick. Wind shear a shit, but you're always going to have weather anomalies from time to time

Heck even with the shit conditions today they could spot the fairing from Mr Steven. I bet they'll catch one next time

CNN Headline: SpaceX loses multi-million dollar nose cone

https://money.cnn.com/2018/07/25/technology/spacex-fairing-recovery-iridium-7

Wouldn't "Holy shit, SpaceX almost does thing no one's ever done before, this time in terrible weather" have been a more appropriate headline?

Maybe this wouldn't happen if Elon would stop tearing into people like a drunken president whenever someone says something he doesn't like.

Sure, but they chose to make the click-bait headline negative instead of positive. Maybe negative headlines just get more clicks anyway, but it's also possible this has something to do with Elon acting like a jackass.

>> No.9894038

>100% sure it doesn't have to do with that.
Why?

Elon attacks the press, the press responds in an expected manner. No conspiracy theory, just regular human behavior.

Is your hypothesis that the headline was written that way because an anti-SpaceX article is likely to get more clicks? Maybe people were clicking hoping to see an explosion?

Even if true, the editor has to know what he's doing, and it would mean he's OK with it.
