How do they look for it? Do they have an algorithm that checks the numbers being spat out by the machine? I would imagine that it would take a while to detect that.

There's no good way to check for something like that.
We're not even at a point where we can prove pi is a normal number that has that property of containing all finite sequences of digits in the first place let alone being able to do efficient string searches of it.
In fact I think there might be a proof against even the possibility of being able to do a search like that on a normal number.

Where can I learn more about the picture in the OP.
I'm superficially familiar with the allegory of the cave (truth, illusion, forms etc.), but it seems like the picture in the OP relays more information than I am familiar with..
