What is and isn't a waste of time is subjective. The people that study pure math are, in their own opinion, the least time-wasting people, so it seems likely that if you study it you will feel that you're not wasting your time. I also know people that feel immense satisfaction modding super smash brothers melee on the assembly level though, so maybe there is more objective value to some things. I'd still argue math has objective value, people underestimate just how useful reasonably new pure math is in applied settings.

Applied mathematicians make the math that they apply. Pure mathematicians make... "proofs." Calculus, the finite element method, modern formulations of Laplace transforms, and basically everything important in analysis was invented by applied mathematicians. The real cherry on top is when you consider that pure mathematicians can't even solve simple PDEs just because the solutions aren't closed form lmao.

Studying pure math is a waste of time, even if you're doing it for fun. I enjoy playing videogames, that doesn't make it not a waste of time.

The only person who can reason that studying pure math isn't a waste of time is someone who sincerely is a platonist and believes himself to be studying reality directly. But even this person would be studying physics because that's part of the study of trying to understand reality.

The people who only study pure math and say "It's subjective! It's interesting! You just don't get it!" are no better than modern art with a few splashes of colors and lines. It's intellectually lazy to work in a vacuum like that. Like I said, it's akin to playing videogames and entirely a waste of time but that doesn't mean you can't have fun. Just don't delude yourself while you do it that it's something more than it really is.
