Redpill me on common core
Is it really the worthless meme that boomers say it is?

Ask local experts on math, education, and math education.

I have a relative on my state board of education
I explained to her my issues with education as a whole and she asked me if I had any ideas
I asked her how common core was going
She didn't know much but she said something about it not being implemented properly and really messing up the 8th graders

Actually, it's not the boomers (~30 year olds) that complain about common core. It's mostly the people who are retiring now (60+ year olds)

I thought they were the ones who complained about "new math"
At least new math is similar to old math though.
Common core just seems like tard thinking to me
>Every person alive develops these counting skills naturally over time
>So therefore lets change our entire education system and base it around forcing this method as the only way to get marked correct

LOL no, common core is simply a broad set of educational standards. The conflation of it with specific methods of arithmetic is just a /pol/ meme.

>Common core is a broad set of standards
Yeah that just so happened to come out with a state mandated universal lesson plan
Am I not to complain when it's poorly implemented?
>Communism works guys, that's just wasn't real communism!
That's besides the point though. Everyone I hear say this never brings up any positive evidence that proves common core works.
>Because there isn't any

What lesson plan? These memes are just random worksheets from who knows when. Are you seriously this gullible?

I'm not talking about the plethora of problems that were un-tested before being printed
NY state sent out lesson plans for 1st-8th grade to prime them for common core in high school
The issue is that the 8th graders are expected to catch up on half their lifetime's worth of maths.
My aunt thinks unless we cut the program this summer these kids are all going to fail 9th grade
>You have no idea how bad it actually is

This one is an obvious meme to anyone who knows multiplication
>>9843072
This one is the standards
But the individual state/city boards of education have the ability to approve lesson plans and give those to the teachers
>They did this in NY
>My aunt, a NYS board of education member is worried that 9th graders are all going to fail math next year because they had to learn all of common core in 1 year
I know this thread is pretty dead but kindly get the fuck out so we can have real discussion

Common Core in and of itself isn't a problem. At its best it's essentially meant to teach kids how to approach and solve problems in a method that is similar to/the same as the way most people already approach and solve problems. The bigger issue is that most teachers, especially those in primary education, are complete fucking morons who lack education in many of the subjects they attempt to teach due to really poor higher education and state standards. Future teachers don't go to uni to learn, they go to find someone who they can latch onto for support. The other issue is that anybody with any actual ability will never want to be a teacher as most aren't respected due to aforementioned lack of standards and they don't want to deal with a bunch of retards; students and parents alike, who constantly bitch at them because someone can't be bothered to apply themselves. This last part is especially true of any school with a large percentage of black students from low income neighborhoods. These "students" don't want to learn and will actively try to discourage anyone else from doing so. They will mock another kid if he fails and get pissy when he succeeds, but they themselves will never try.
If you want your kids to get a half-decent education send them to a private college prep school or a respectable catholic school; preferably one connected to the Jesuits.

Also, if you have the choice between multiple private schools, try to check if there's a sizable jewish population in attendance. If there is, then you're likely looking at a decent school

This isn't a Black thing though this is poor neighborhood thing. Many poor students come from shit schools that at the start fail to prepare them with the building blocks that pre-school early primary school is supposed to do. Then as the go further into schooling they don't have the procedure and foundations so adapt.

Poor schools have teachers that don't give a shit because the school board don't give a shit and the parents want shit to be better for their kids but the school fails to deliver so their hope declines as well.
