This is legit question scifags:

If we could build a very long tube that goes all around the earth until the ends meet and join. would it fall off or stay there?

For the sake of this argument let's say the distance from the tube to the earth is the same all around (say, 20 feet).

I think it would have a different centre of gravity and so would collide with the earth.

>> No.983485

20 feet is very bad for isolating it from all kinds of damage.

Then again I think even at sattellite altitude the goddamned surface would still suck your awesome pipe, eventually

>> No.983486

It would bend in places. If it was completely rigid and unable to bend, it would spin round like the earth is hula hooping, due to fluxuations in graviational potential energy.

If it was absolutely rigid and perfectly balanced, it would stay suspended.

If it was absolutely rigid but NOT perfectly balanced, it would fall to earth on one side and stay 40 feet in the air on the other side.

If it's not absolutely rigid, it will just sort of compress itself until it's small enough to rest on the surface of the earth.

I'm pretty sure this guy hit the nail on the head.

>> No.985114

It would be in unstable equilibrium. Just like ringworld. Or Halo.

>> No.985128

Unless it is made out of a super strong material it would break apart. If it were made out of a super strong material then people within the tube would feel the gravitational pull of Earth and stick to the "ground" of the tube. It wouldn't have to be made out of a super strong material if it were sinning at the right speed but people inside wouldn't feel the pull of Earth.

>> No.985144

>>985128
I'm not really sure how you could construct it in space without it spinning.

>> No.985148

Unless you can think of a strong enough material for the structure not to collapse upon itself, something like this wouldn't work unless the tube was rotating fast enough for its angular momentum to counteract the force of gravity.

We couldn't construct it period, so I thought it moot.

hey /sci/ if I (somehow) made a rigid pole over 300,000 KM long and hit a ball at the end of it, would that not be a transferal of energy faster than the speed of light?

Ok; I know this is spam, and I have a wild idea who it's from, but what the fuck the fuck is it suppose to say? This guy has got yo be so out right fucking desperate to leave some kind of mark on 4chan. I don't think I can find any more pity for his failure in life then I do now. Seriously, he's more pathetic then a dog with no tong trying to lick his balls.

Read the capital letters if you care. Honestly, it's not worth decoding. It might as well be straight gibberish anyway.
