the majority passing through proves that the atom is mostly empty

the small amount passing through at an alter angle is due to the alpha particle being repelled by the nucleus of the gold ato; they must be the same charge

the tiniest amount of alpha particles reflected straight back nearly collided with the nucleus; this proved that the nucleus must be very small and positively charged, since the particles weren't absorbed

we already knew alpha particles were positively charged
