I have been accepted into an ivy league school with a double major of physics and mathematics. I am willing to dedicate all my free time to studying. What am I in for?

>> No.977755

You will work diligentely in college and have great success in life afterwards with your 2 majors, ultimately honoring your family and bringing about a new era of scientific advancements.
That should feel good, man.

>> No.977751

off the first page already, so bump. Also, do you guys ever use amphetamines like ritalin or adderal to help you study? Any issues with addiction or serious adverse effects?

>> No.977763

you'll be fine.

Hahaha, I sure as fuck hope so. I really enjoy people posting positive nonsense like that. Everyone needs a pat on the back sometimes, regardless of how nonsensical it is :)

And I have been having a bad day, so thank you!

Wow, a lot of niceties today, thank you :P but I would appreciate some insight on how much work (in hours) and how stressful it is over long periods.

Many times when I worry about my academic/financial future, I tend to find positive things about myself or what I've been doing to give me some confidence that things will be awesome regardless of my setbacks.
Just sharing the love; I had a great day today.

Ivy league? basically once you're in you're in. Just don't get thrown out.

Math and physics? ... lots of work. Probably 12 hours class + 24 hours study a week. Unless you're some kind of genius or are going to Cornell.

>> No.977806

>>977791

That's awesome man, I try to do the same. It makes me feel way better just knowing there are people out there who like making others feel better for no reason other than because they can.

>> No.977811

Drop one of your majors. Science is a demanding mistress!

>> No.977821

Yeah you're going nowhere with math. Ditch that shit.

Thats some varying advice. 24 hours a week plus classes seems like nothing to me. Here's my current schedule (I'm homeschooled). I study calculus (analysis, proofs and stuff, fucking hard), for about 5 hours a day, between 3-5 a day I dedicate to physics/chemistry or research in optics that I do at a local university with grad students (that REALLY helped me get accepted to every college I applied to). The rest of the time I learn french and read, work out, or spend talking to the few intelligent friends I have. So I'm pretty much willing to dedicate most of my time to studying if need be.

I'm just afraid that I'll get there and I'm going to have to work 12-16 hours a day, have a heroic amount of focus while I study, and have a shit sleep schedule.

The grad students I work with like scaring me.

>> No.977831

Just wondering, is Cornell harder or easier?

>> No.977832

>12-16 hours a day
Dude, if anyone had to study that much, nobody would major in those subjects.
It will not be anywhere near that amount.
Relax, you'll have a good time.

>> No.977844

>>977831

OP here, I'm not really in any position of authority, but I've worked with undergrads who have gone to Cornell, they're stupid as fuck. The grad students I know from Cornell hate the shit out of it.

>>977821
I'm doing it because I love learning and I figure I only have one chance to be a full time college student, I'll make the most of it. Also, I want to get into theoretical physics and from the physicists I've spoken to, having a minor/double major in math is sexy as fuck to employers.

>> No.977855

>>977831
Cornell is the retard that tags along with the rest of the group and nobody has the heart to kick him out of the Ivy League schools.

>> No.977862

>>977844
I went to Cornell and I can pretty much agree that the undergrads were stupid as hell. I know this is going to sound pompous, but I would frequently not do any of the problem sets or study at all for exams and still end up with a B+/A- (despite the class being curved).

>> No.977878

>I am willing to dedicate all my free time to studying. What am I in for?

A lot of studying. Good on you, don't be one of those jerkoffs who goes to school and does nothing but drink and party. Go to school to learn.

>> No.977884

>>977832

Thanks man, that's a load off my chest. I would still appreciate any details anybody would be willing to share about their work load through school.

Speaking of Cornell and all that, what do you guys think of William and Mary? I'm going there because I'm getting a full ride, and they do a lot of research in what I have been doing the last few years. I know they are a liberal arts school but they do have a fantastic physics program. Math is meh, but that isn't my focus so I don't mind.

>> No.977904

>>977878

I'm just namefagging because it's easier, but yeah, I agree wholeheartedly. Nothing wrong with partying, but the fuckups who go to school specifically to party and bitch about doing any school are assrags who never did a day of real work in their lives.

>> No.977914

Hey /sci/, i have a shitty GPA because of some shit i did, and will be graduating as a Super Senior next year

I was gonna go to art school, but recently, i've been thinking about trying to get a degree in math or a science field, like bio or chem.

Should i just go to a community college, or should i test for a GPA and try to get a good score from that to use, instead of sending my high school transcripts and such?

BTW, OP, Congratz on getting accepted. Only those who try and reach for the stars will actually get there.

>> No.977921

Your call; both disciplines get very demanding in short order and both have extreme breadth, so stuff from one does not typically transfer to be of use in the other.
Plan on 2x 3 hour labs/week in physics, plus plenty of course hours, math is just more courses, linear algebra, topology etc. You'll be busy.
Do note that formal math courses, aka "advanced" courses, may be useless unless you plan to spend your life as a professional mathematician proving new theorems.
Why are you double majoring? If it is to get a better job in electronics, physics is probably quite enough.
The combination does make you appealing for the surveillance/intelligence world, but that pays only average.

>> No.977927

>>977904
But more importantly, it's a waste of money. After all, most students take out loans to get through college. If you fuck up by partying too much, you're basically flushing thousands of dollars down the toilet.

>> No.977935

Take my advice: don't double major. Pick one field, do it really well, and take as many grad-level courses as you can as an undergrad.

>> No.977943

yale is the same, they would bump me up from a B to an A c to B and assign me a grad tutor shit was so cash

>> No.977958

>>977921

Hmm, what about applied mathematics? I considered computer science instead of math for a while. If I had to pick a second major, would you have any recommendations?

Also, I took all of freshman calc and physics, as well as an intro to programming and a linear algebra (why the fuck is that a 200/300 level class in most schools). I want to retake them at W&M for a few reasons. I want to have more time to truly master the subject matter (got As in every course but there is always more to learn), I'd like to keep the pace of my colleagues so I'm doing the same shit the people I came in with are doing, and I don't want to jump into anything I'm not ready for and get into a predicament where I can't go back. Any thoughts on that?

>> No.977996

>>977935

And how would that affect me beneficially as a grad student? Less courses=more research, get out faster, what? I'm not looking to get out as fast as I can, I'm looking to be a gem on the playing field of potentially hirees when I get my PhD.
