From the 60s to late 70s, people dreamed about a future where we'd have space colonies and moonbases.
It's been twice as long as when they thought that we'd have those things. And we've fucking regressed.

The reason why the Apollo missions were cancelled and NASA was gutted to the point of single digit budgets was because of TV viewership.
Americans (i.e. YOU FAGGOTS) stopped watching mission launches. So given democracy, the right thing was to cancel it all.

Listen mates, progress is a myth. It's a myth invented in the 19th century. When progress was real.

But it's not real. We had a "fad" of science.
500 years from now, society will look exactly the fucking same.
The next 100,000 years will be the petty capitalistic rehashes of the current era. The peak of consumerism.
Eventually we'll run out of resources and go back to stoneage farming.

And everyone will forget that the stars are places we could have gone.

Humility is for faggots.
What disaster did we have that showed us our place?
How many (non-Soviet) people died in space?
So few. So fucking few.

If it was like a 50/50 chance, I could buy that.
Learn more before we attempt more.
But every single fucking person who set off for the moon made it. And came back home.

America fucked up because Nixon and all future presidents were afraid of upsetting the public.
Because Americans are dumb fucking shits who couldn't even be bothered to watch the fucking moon landings.

Space exploration and/or colonization would be an unprecedented waste of time, lives, resources, money, and effort. It would be overall more beneficial to mankind to colonize the bottom of the ocean.

Unironically believes that "TV viewership" funded fucking NASA.
Has such an Amerocentric view to actually believe the slowing/decline of a single American governmental agency marks a decline for millennia of space exploration.
True, many of the most significant missions came from the Apollo missions, US satellites, etc., but there are dozens of countries with space programs and commitments to scientific advancement (most of Europe, maybe India if it weren't so shitty). In addition, the "privatization" of space travel will serve well, as the global economy is largely capitalistic, so individuals/corporations will be able to extend progress where the government fails.
Don't be sad OP, we'll get there one day. In the meantime FREEZE YOUR BODY SO YOU CAN WAKE UP IN THE SCI FUTURE

>And we've fucking regressed.

Take a look at pic related. Notice something?

That's right: every one of those photos was taken by a robot. And robots have rolled across the face of Mars and set down on Titan and even Venus and Jupiter (before they were destroyed).

Expect this to continue, meatbag, and the machines to get more mobile and autonomous. It's cheaper, faster and far more informative. Eventually, tiny probes the size of rice grains will be sent to the stars, where they'll build our new civilization for us. The nice part is, every time you, as a consumer, buy a smaller and more powerful smartphone, you're actually helping to push that eventuality forward.

The future isn't what it used to be.

>> No.9777688

>>9777680
I think this is an important note. Probes seem vastly superior to manned missions and I think we'll continue to find more sophisticated ways to use them as time goes on.

Although I do hear Bezos wants a moonbase so maybe our dreams of getting sucked out of an airlock or exploding in space can still come true.

TV viewership didn't fund NASA,but it did influence politicians' opinion about space exploration.
This is a democracy, which is a popularity contest. To do something unpopular needs a damned good reason for a politician

woah, make way for the prophet and his crystal ball, guys
>And everyone will forget that the stars are places we could have gone
no, we fucking couldn't. Anyone who dreams of colonizing another planet is underestimating how little prepared we could ever be for a completely alien atmosphere, with alien life, alien resources, and alien diseases that would surely make our colony a short-lived one

The space travel progress during the Cold War was a product of the Cold War. For the us government to invest more in space they need a better reason then "muh moon bases."

Yes, linear progress is a capitalist myth. The real progress always happens in a form of revolutions.

But you are wrong when you think that capitalism will last forever.
Relations of production, or type of society is changes when it can't sustain anymore the changes in productive forces which are constantly evolving.

You are pessimistic because you don't understand historical materialism.
